The Las Vegas Aces clinched a playoff spot Thursday night in Washington, 83-76, and they did it on the night Jackie Young has been circling all season: 32 points, five 3-pointers, a season high in the game that mattered most on the calendar so far.
Here is the part I keep turning over. A'ja Wilson scored 15. For most of the league that is a fine night at the office. For her it is a whisper. And the Aces still went into someone else's building, closed out a seven-point win, and locked up their postseason berth anyway. When the best player in the sport has an ordinary scoring night and the result never really tips, that tells you something about the rest of the roster that a 30-point Wilson night would have hidden.
Young has been this player before, just not this loudly. Las Vegas took her first overall in 2019 out of Notre Dame and spent a couple of seasons hearing about what she wasn't yet, then watched her win Most Improved Player in 2022 and turn into the guard who makes the Aces' spacing legal. Five made threes on a night the offense needed a second engine is exactly the version of Young that made those title teams in 2022 and 2023 so hard to guard. You cannot load up on Wilson if the perimeter is going to make you pay in bunches.
For Washington, this one stings in the way close ones do. They hung around, they made Las Vegas earn the last four minutes, and they still walked off a seven-point loser to a team that just certified its season. That is the thin margin the middle of this league lives on.
What comes next is immediate for both. The Aces are back home Saturday night against Minnesota, 8 ET, which is the kind of measuring-stick game that tells you whether Thursday was a clincher or a springboard. The Mystics host Los Angeles at 7:30 ET Saturday with plenty still to play for.
