Travel spots get overrated and underrated in cycles, and I want to see whether this one is priced like a neutral field or like a real home game. What turns it into a play: a number that treats Stanford as an afterthought instead of a host.
- Fresno State at USC, 9:00 ET. Late window in Los Angeles, two offenses with something to prove and a first half I am more interested in than the full game. What turns it: first-half pricing that lags what the full-game number is telling me.
- Toledo at Michigan State, 8:00 ET. The MAC on a Friday night in a Big Ten building is one of my favorite recurring genres in this sport. What turns it: a spread that assumes the visitor is a body bag rather than a program.
- East Carolina at Alabama, Saturday noon. One of the talking-head takes making the rounds this morning had Alabama closer to irrelevance than to a national title, which is the kind of sentence that exists to be clipped. I am not eyeing the side. I am eyeing whether the noon-kick, low-emotion opener produces the kind of listless first half that narrative-driven markets never price.
- Cal and UCLA in Berkeley. No number, no lean, just a series I like. Renewed at California Memorial Stadium after these two stopped being conference peers.
