Short version on CFB best bets today: nothing cleared my number this morning, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise on the first Sunday of the season. Week 1 is the loudest, least informative weekend of the year. Everybody just watched one game and decided they know something.

That's the mood. One poll already moved Ohio State off the top line after the Buckeyes did everything they were supposed to do in the opener, which tells you the voters were bored, not persuaded. ESPN's index reshuffled its Top 25 and its playoff projection flipped after a single weekend. Alabama beat East Carolina in Tuscaloosa and then spent the morning making mascot jokes about it. That is the entire information environment right now. Vibes and a spreadsheet that has seen one game.

So I'm watching, not swinging.

The eyeing list for Week 1's nightcaps

  1. Wisconsin at Notre Dame, 7:30 ET. The whole thing is possession count. Wisconsin's path in South Bend is to shorten the game, win the down-and-distance fight, and keep Notre Dame's offense standing on the sideline with a towel. What turns this into a play for me is a total that prices the Irish's speed without pricing Wisconsin's willingness to grind the clock into dust. Not there yet.
  2. Louisville at Ole Miss, 7:30 ET. Same window, opposite temperament. This is a tempo game against a team that likes to play fast too, and games where both sides want the ball back quickly tend to get away from a conservative number. I want to see how the second half is officiated and how deep Ole Miss goes into its bench before I trust anything.
  3. SMU at Florida State, Monday 7:30 ET. Standalone night, full national eyeballs, an ACC market that gets soft when the public has only one thing to look at. Monday standalones are where the wild frontier lives. What would move me: a Sunday-night injury report I can actually read.
  4. The Week 1 overreaction trade. One poll drop, one index update, one changed playoff projection. Perception moves faster than talent does in September, and the fade lives in whichever ranked team got quietly downgraded for a boring win. That's a tell, but a tell is not a price.
  5. Alabama's neighborhood. A dominant home opener plus a trolling caption is not a data point. I file it and move on.

The one I lean on

Wisconsin at Notre Dame. A lean, clearly not a play. My read is that the market is pricing the name on the home jersey and the crowd, and undercharging the Badgers' ability to make this a 55-snap slog where every possession matters double.

checked the almanac: the last time these two met, at Soldier Field in 2021, Wisconsin was in front at halftime and Notre Dame still won it going away. Fast starts by the visitor have not historically meant much here. One beat of wonder, then back to business.

What I'm watching next: the Sunday-night availability notes out of Tallahassee ahead of Monday, and whether anybody sells the poll drop as news. If a number opens on the wrong side of that noise, I'll say so and show the work. Until then, the math says pass. Twenty-one and up where it's legal, this is entertainment with variance attached, and September is a long month.
