Straight answer first: nothing on my board cleared this morning, so there are no CFB best bets today from this desk. What I do have is eight games, a whole offseason of theories, and the specific handful of spots I will be staring at until something either confirms or dies.

Week 0 is my favorite fraud of the calendar. The sport comes back Saturday and ESPN is not even sending College GameDay to it, holding the set for the next three weeks instead. Football arrives before its own studio show does. That is the whole personality of this weekend in one sentence.

So we get the wild frontier version: eight games, most of them mismatches on paper, played by teams nobody has seen since January. Opening weekend is where market opinion is thinnest and where I have historically been most wrong in the most instructive ways. Respect it.

What CFB games are on Saturday, August 29?

  1. North Carolina at TCU, 12:00 PM ET. The noon opener, and the one I have the least information about on either side. New rosters, portal churn, a home team that has been through a full offseason of expectation. What turns it into a play: a clean read on who is actually starting at quarterback for the visitors. Until then it is a watch, not a wager.
  2. San Jose State at USC, 3:00 PM ET. Classic Week 0 chalk spot in the Coliseum. The mechanism I care about is not whether USC wins, it is how long the starters stay on the field in a game they control. Backdoor risk lives in the fourth quarter of these.
  3. NC State at Virginia, 3:30 PM ET. The only game on the slate with real league stakes attached in Week 0, which means both staffs have been pointing at it since spring. Conference openers this early tend to be tighter and uglier than the season's average. That is a tell worth sitting with.
  4. Jacksonville State at North Dakota State, 5:30 PM ET. FBS program walking into Fargo. From the almanac: north dakota state won five straight fcs national titles from 2011 through 2015, and that building has not forgotten how. If this one is priced like a routine step-up game, my number gets very interested.
  5. Hawaii at Stanford, 7:00 PM ET. Hawaii travels a couple thousand miles east, but kickoff lands early afternoon on their body clock, which is the friendliest possible version of a brutal trip. The travel narrative and the actual biology point different directions here. Mind the gap like it owes you money.

The one I lean on

Fargo. Not a play, a lean, and I want to be clear about the difference. Jacksonville State at North Dakota State is the game where I think public instinct and the actual roster gap are furthest apart, and it is the spot where I would need the least confirmation to move. If the number treats this like a formality, I am on the home side of it.

Everything else stays in the notebook. Nothing cleared my number this morning, and manufacturing a play out of an eight-game slate in August is how you spend September apologizing.
