Nothing on my board cleared this morning. The two spots that came closest are worth less than half a percent of edge apiece, so let's be honest about what this is: a watch list, not a slate. That's CFB best bets today from my desk, and I'd rather hand you an empty hand than a manufactured one.
The day already gave us its best return and it wasn't on any board. A college kid drilled a barefoot field goal on the GameDay set and walked off a millionaire. Barefoot. Meanwhile Oxford greeted its former coach with a chant I would need a lawyer sitting next to me to print. Lane Kiffin walking back into that stadium on the other sideline is the story of the week, and I don't need a ticket on it to love it.
CFB best bets today: the eyeing list
- Mississippi State at South Carolina, 5:35 ET. My board has the Gamecocks moneyline offered at -155 against a -157 fair. That is 0.448% of edge, a rounding error wearing a suit. What turns it into a play: the price drifting back toward -150 before kick, or late news that moves my number without moving theirs.
- Florida State at Alabama, 5:15 ET. Tuscaloosa in the late afternoon with a real opponent walking in. I don't have a number I trust here yet, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Watching, not touching.
- Florida at Auburn, 7:00 ET. Jordan-Hare after dark is where models and markets argue loudest, because the market prices the crowd and the model prices the roster. If anything gets me involved it's the total, not the side.
- Michigan State at Notre Dame, 7:30 ET. Night game in South Bend, a spot where public money tends to arrive in one lump. What would turn it into a play is a side of that lump I disagree with.
- Louisiana-Lafayette moneyline, -250 offered against a -254 fair, 0.435%. Laying two and a half to one for a whisper of edge. That's the picture: small edges over and over, no heroics. At that price the variance shouts and the edge mumbles.

The one I lean on most
South Carolina moneyline. A lean, not a play, and I want that word doing real work. My fair sits two cents from the offer, which means the gap barely exists. Mind the gap like it owes you money, sure, but this one owes me about a nickel. It stays a lean until the price comes to me.
That's also the honest read on the whole card: the math says pass on everything else I looked at. Saturdays like this are for watching football, and college football on a September night is a fine way to spend one with no action at all. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where it's legal, and remember variance doesn't care how good the read was.
