Texas leads the country in Texas Longhorns preseason All-America selections, placing four players on the Associated Press first team announced Tuesday. The SEC accounted for 14 of the 27 first-team spots. More than half the honors in one league.
Preseason honors are a projection, not an accounting. Nobody has blocked anybody yet. What a list like this actually measures is how many known, proven, returning pieces a roster carries, and by that measure Texas is carrying the heaviest load in the sport right now. Four is not a rounding error. Four is voters looking at a two-deep and saying they cannot find the soft spot.
The league number is the one I keep rereading. Fourteen of 27. That is not depth, that is gravity. checked the almanac: Texas has only been playing SEC football since 2024, and it is already the program the league's national case gets built around.
The timing gives the week a little tension, too. There is a real argument running about whether Texas or Oregon deserves the No. 1 preseason ranking, and a haul like this is the kind of thing that gets waved around in that argument by people who want a shortcut to an answer. It isn't one. Preseason polls are a starting position, and the sport has spent a hundred years reminding everybody how little that guarantees.
And then the reminder arrived on the same afternoon. The reporting says starting left tackle Trevor Goosby has a bone bruise in his left knee with no clear timetable for his return. I do not have the full list of the four honorees in front of me yet, so I am not going to guess whether he is on it. What I know is that bone bruises are stubborn. Nothing structural, nothing dramatic, but they heal on their own schedule and not on a football calendar, and the blind side is the last place a team wants to be running an experiment.
That is the honest shape of an August like this one: the recognition and the injury report show up on the same day, and only one of them affects Saturdays. Texas will spend the rest of camp figuring out who slides out to left tackle if the answer takes a while, and that answer will tell you more about this team than any preseason ballot.
What I am watching next: a timetable on Goosby, and whether the voters who put four Longhorns on this list also hand Texas the top overall spot when the full poll lands.
