The new Top 25 is not getting adjusted this week. It is getting rebuilt. Ranked teams took losses across the country in Week 4, and the college football rankings Week 5 poll coming out of ESPN is going to read less like a re-sort and more like somebody took the whole thing down to the studs and started over.
We are one third of the way through the 2026 regular season. That is the part that makes this weekend land harder than a normal September Saturday. Early-season chaos in Week 1 is a curiosity. Chaos at the one-third mark is a verdict.
What happened in college football Week 4
The short version: the top of the sport did not hold. Ranked teams lost in enough places that every poll and model in the country spent Sunday morning rewriting itself. The SP+ update ran fresh numbers on all 138 FBS teams, résumé and strength of schedule included, and ESPN's FPI Top 25 got overhauled rather than nudged.
When the computers and the humans both blow up their own work in the same twelve hours, that is a tell. It means the losses were not one flukey Thursday nighter. They were spread across the map.
Why Oregon and USC is the loudest story of the weekend
Oregon put 50 on the board against USC and carved up a defense that was supposed to be the thing holding that team together. That alone reorders the Big Ten conversation.
But the game did not end clean. Dante Moore went down on a hit that Dan Lanning called "disgusting" afterward, and Lanning did not soften it. Then the tunnel scuffle, the second one this rivalry has produced, with no word yet on injuries or ejections from it. I do not have the full medical picture on Moore, and I am not going to guess at one. What I will say is that a rivalry that keeps finding its way into the tunnel after the whistle is a rivalry the conference office is going to have to have a conversation about, and probably soon.
There was a better human moment a few time zones away. After Minnesota won at Washington, P.J. Fleck grabbed senior linebacker Maverick Baranowski's head with both hands, wiped the blood from his mouth, and brushed it across his own left cheek. Blood brothers. You can roll your eyes at Fleck, plenty of people do, but that is a coach telling a fifth-year kid he is in it with him. That image is going to outlive the box score.

What comes next
GameDay is headed to Iowa City for Ohio State at Iowa, which tells you where the network thinks the weight of Week 5 sits. Kinnick in the fall, a ranked matchup, and a crew that knows exactly what that stadium sounds like when it gets what it wants.
Elsewhere, the Florida conversation has shifted from survival to playoff-caliber, at least in the eyes of people who watch a lot of film for a living. That is a real turn for a program that spent the last few years getting talked about in the past tense.
What I am watching next is Moore's status and whatever the Big Ten says about the tunnel. The poll will settle itself in a week. Those two things won't.
