The NBA offseason recap machine cranked back to life this morning, one team profile per weekday from here through Sept. 18, and it did not take long to find the loudest room in the league. Los Angeles. The Clippers write-up leads with the Kawhi Leonard-Aspiration saga still rolling, and the word used for their 2026-27 outlook is turmoil. Not rebuilding. Not retooling. Turmoil.
That is a strong word for late August, which is normally the month where the NBA goes quiet and the rest of us pretend to care about golf. The league's calendar has a dead zone between the last free agent signing and the first training camp report, and the team-by-team preview rollout exists to fill it. It usually reads like homework. This year the homework has a plot.
The rest of the board is not asleep either. The buzz tracker still has live movement on it, with Cleveland, Denver and the Clippers all attached to deals in the last stretch of the summer, which is unusual this deep into August. Most rosters are frozen by now. And the Summer Forecast panel dropped its conference champion and Finals calls the same morning, which means the preview series and the predictions are going to spend the next three weeks arguing with each other in public. Good. That is the fun part.
What comes next is mostly a waiting game on Leonard. His situation has been the single most unresolved thread in the league all summer, and until it lands, every Clippers projection is written in pencil. A franchise that spent enormous money and patience building around one player does not get to plan around anything else until the question gets answered.

The rest of the schedule is simple enough. One team a weekday, twenty-nine more to go, and by Sept. 18 the league will have been accounted for roster by roster. I will be watching which contenders come out of these profiles looking thinner than the summer chatter suggested, because the previews that matter are always the ones that quietly downgrade somebody everybody already penciled in.
