If you came looking for NFL best bets today, I have nothing on the board and I am not going to build one out of preseason lint. August does not hand you prices worth taking. It hands you medical updates, and medical updates in the middle of the month are the raw material for September, not a reason to do something this afternoon.
So this is the radar, not the ledger. Five things I am tracking, what each one would have to do to become a real play, and the one I lean toward hardest.
NFL best bets today: what's actually on my radar
- Ozzy Trapilo, Bears left tackle. Chicago activated him off the physically unable to perform list, seven months after he ruptured his patellar tendon in the postseason. That is a genuinely fast clock for that injury. But eligible to practice and ready to protect a quarterback's blind side are two different countries. What turns it into a play: full-pad reps stacked back to back, and him taking first-team snaps rather than rotating in for a series and disappearing.
- George Kittle, 49ers tight end. Torn Achilles in January, and he said it is possible he practices soon, with the opener against the Rams in Australia as the target. "Possible" is doing an enormous amount of work in that sentence. What turns it: him in pads, consecutive sessions, no maintenance days sprinkled in.
- Aaron Donald's decision, Rams. McVay says there is no invisible deadline but he'd like an answer sooner than later. That is a coach being kind in public and impatient in private, and that's a tell. What turns it: an actual signing, not a report of a conversation.
- Marcus Mariota, Commanders. Sprained right MCL, out the rest of the preseason, expected back for the regular-season opener. That last clause is the whole story. A backup quarterback with a clean September timeline is noise. A backup quarterback whose timeline slips while the starter is banged up is a Week 1 total nobody has repriced yet.
- Jaxson Dart, Giants. The Saturday preseason tape had the risk and the reward in the same quarter, which is exactly what you expect and exactly why nobody knows anything yet. Watching, not acting.
The one I lean on most
Kittle. Not because I have a side, because that opener is the game on the entire calendar most likely to be priced off stale information. An Achilles return, an ocean of travel, and a division opponent all stacked into one game. Health news that lands late tends to land loud in a spot like that, and I would rather be early on the information than clever about the number.
A lean is a lean. It is not a play, it is not a position, and it does not become either until something concrete moves.
From the almanac: aaron donald walked away in march 2024 with three defensive player of the year trophies already on the shelf, which is why "sooner than later" sounds so loud coming out of that building.
Nothing cleared my number today. That is not a bad day, that's an honest one, and there is no faster way to torch a season than manufacturing action in the middle of August. Keep it to entertainment money, 21+ where it's legal, and if it ever stops feeling like fun, 1-800-GAMBLER.
What I'm watching next: whether Trapilo and Kittle string together consecutive padded practices. That's the tell that turns August paperwork into September value. You know where to find me.
