Late September, five games on the WNBA slate, and my card came back looking like a wall of chalk. That is the honest state of WNBA best bets today: three leans, all favorites, all priced within a whisker of my own fair number. Nothing has cleared. I still want to tell you where I'm looking, because the looking is the job.
When the board and my model agree this tightly, the edge is usually hiding in the games I have no number on at all. More on that below.
WNBA best bets today: the eyeing list
- Washington Mystics vs Chicago (7:30 ET). My fair price on the Mystics sits a touch north of where it's offered. That is the widest gap on my whole card and it is still under two-thirds of a percent. What turns it into a play: a materially fatter gap, not the sliver I've got. At a price this steep you are laying more than seven to win one, and a 0.6% edge does not survive a single rotation surprise.
- Golden State at Los Angeles (10:00 ET). Same shape, smaller gap. I make the Valkyries a hair better than the number says, which in practice means my model and the market are reading the same game. What turns it: something in warmups I don't have yet, a real change to who's available.
- Las Vegas at Phoenix (10:00 ET). The thinnest one, barely two-tenths of a percent. That is rounding error wearing a bow tie. I am watching this one for the basketball, not the ticket.
- Toronto at Connecticut (7:00 ET). No number of mine on this game, and that is information too. When I can't price a game confidently, I don't force a price. I'll watch pace and how deep the benches go.
- Indiana at Minnesota (8:00 ET). Also unpriced on my card. Minnesota then hosts New York on Friday and again Sunday, so whatever the Lynx show tonight in terms of minutes and legs is film I'll carry into that pair.
| Spot | Offered | My fair number | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington ML vs CHI | -733 | -773 | 0.623% |
| Golden State ML at LAS | -525 | -538 | 0.391% |
| Las Vegas ML at PHX | -426 | -431 | 0.222% |
The one I lean on most
Washington. Lean, not a play, and I want the distinction to stay loud. I do think the Mystics are a bigger favorite than the number makes them, but laying that kind of juice for a sub-one-percent edge is how you grind a bankroll down while technically being right. Small edges over and over is the picture I love. This is a small edge, once, at a terrifying price. Not the same animal.
checked the almanac: Minnesota has four titles from the 2010s, so a Lynx home stretch in late September has history behind it. Nice thought. Doesn't change a single price on this card.
What I'm watching next
Availability news before the 10 o'clock window, and whether Minnesota's minutes tonight tell me anything about the weekend. If a real gap opens, I'll say so plainly. Right now, the math says pass.
21+ where legal, this is entertainment with variance attached, and a day with nothing on it is a perfectly good day.
