It is Thursday, the leaves have not turned, and ESPN has already sent GameDay to Knoxville with Johnny Knoxville as the guest picker. Somebody in a production meeting got exactly what they wanted. Meanwhile my board is empty, so let me be straight up front: on CFB best bets today, nothing has cleared my number. This is the radar column, not the play column.

Week 4 is where the schedule stops being a formality. No. 1 Texas going into Neyland for the first regular season meeting between these two programs, a Friday night cross-country game, and a Thursday standalone that nobody outside Conway has thought about all week. That last one is usually where the softest number of the week lives.

CFB best bets today: the spots on my radar

  1. Texas at Tennessee, Saturday 12:00 ET. Noon in Neyland with the top-ranked team in the country and a television circus parked on campus. There is also a presidential visit on the docket, which mostly means everyone gets through the gates a lot earlier. The spot I care about is the total: big-stage games get priced for the noise, and a noon kickoff between two teams that would rather win 20 to 17 is the kind of thing that turns into a play only if the number ignores the clock. I want Friday's availability news first.
  1. Clemson at California, Friday 10:30 ET. The latest window on the board, on a Friday, with an ACC team flying to Berkeley. Fewer eyeballs on a game means fewer hands shaping the number, and that is the most reliable tell in this sport. What turns it into a play: Clemson's travel roster and any Cal personnel news that drops late Friday afternoon.
  1. Liberty at Coastal Carolina, tonight 7:30 ET. The only game in America for three hours. Thin market, two teams that will happily play fast, and late-September coastal weather that can quietly eat a total. I want to see the conditions in Conway before I want anything else.
  1. Notre Dame at Purdue, Saturday 2:00 ET. An old rivalry that has spent recent years being a mismatch. I am mostly watching whether the market is still charging full freight for the name on the helmet.
  1. The new CFP strength-of-conference metric. The reporting says the committee adds it as a data point starting in late November. That is not a Saturday spot, it is a futures input, and the teams it helps most are the ones stuck in leagues the eye test undervalues. File it now, use it in eight weeks.

checked the almanac: GameDay's first road show was November 1993, in South Bend, Notre Dame and Florida State. Forty seasons later the set is a bigger deal than most of the games it visits.

the one I lean on most

Clemson at Cal. A lean, not a play. Late Friday windows get the least attention from the people who set honest prices, and I would rather do my work in a quiet room than a loud one. If the number holds where I think it should not, I will say so in writing.

So: nothing cleared my number this morning, and I am not going to manufacture one because it is Week 4 and the sport is fun. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and mind the gap like it owes you money.
