Football's back, and my first honest note on CFB best bets today is that I don't have one yet. Nothing has cleared. Five games, a long summer of nobody hitting anybody, and a market that has to guess at rosters it hasn't seen play a snap. That's not a reason to sit out. That's a reason to look harder and swing less.
Week 0 is the wild frontier of the wild frontier. Depth charts nobody's confirmed, transfer additions who were somewhere else in April, and a portion of the country still deciding whether to care until Labor Day. Even GameDay is off the air this weekend, which tells you where the sport thinks the temperature is. I care. It's five games and I've got nothing else to do.
CFB best bets today: the five spots on my radar
- Jacksonville State at North Dakota State, 5:30 ET. The best spot on the slate and the one I've been circling all week. Fargo in August with the most decorated program in FCS hosting a Conference USA opponent is not a mismatch, it's a coin flip in a loud building. What turns it into a play: a number that treats this like FBS versus FCS instead of good team versus good team.
- Hawaii at Stanford, 7:00 ET. Travel spots cut both directions and the market usually only prices one. Hawaii doing mainland miles in the first week of the season is the tired story. What turns it into a play: whether Stanford's line of scrimmage looks like a team that can just lean on people, because if it doesn't, this is a track meet the number isn't ready for.
- Memphis at UNLV, 10:00 ET. Indoor, late window, two programs that have made real noise in the Group of Five and neither one shy about scoring. My favorite kind of game to watch and my most dangerous kind to bet, because I like it too much. What turns it into a play: total, not side.
- New Mexico State at Florida State, 7:00 ET. A big-brand opener where the interesting question isn't who wins. It's second half, backups on the field, and whether the visitors can hold a body together after halftime.
- Sacramento State at Eastern Michigan, 6:30 ET. The one almost nobody watches, which is exactly why the number can be soft. Thin markets move on small money. That's a tell.
The one I lean on
Fargo. A lean, not a play. Checked the almanac: North Dakota State has walked into FBS buildings and taken the game with them before, Kansas State in Manhattan back in 2013 the one I always come back to. That history is priced in by now, mostly, and I still think the market undercooks how hard that stadium plays. I'll know more in the first quarter than the whole preseason told me.
What I'm watching next: how Jacksonville State's front holds up on early downs, and whether the Memphis-UNLV game plays as fast as it looks on paper. If either answers clean, I'll have something to say. If neither does, I'll say that too.
Week 0 is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal. Small edges over and over, no heroics.
