Last Saturday in September, and the slate runs from an early dinner in Happy Valley to a late kick in El Paso. Here is the honest state of my CFB best bets today list: nothing has cleared as a play. Three small edges sit on my board, two marquee kickoffs are research, and one injury note matters more for October than it does for tonight.
That is not a cop-out. That is the job in Week 5, when the market has finally seen four games of tape on everybody and the soft numbers have mostly hardened.
What I'm eyeing on the CFB best bets today board
- Florida A&M vs Alabama A&M. The Rattlers sit at home as a plus-money side and my number has them better than the board does. It is the biggest of my three edges and it is still under two points of EV, which tells you what kind of day this is. What turns it into a play: the plus number surviving to kick. If it flips to a small minus, the whole case goes with it.
- Maine at Elon. Laying better than two-to-one on the road team's head, which I do not love on principle, but the fair price sits a tick past the offered price. Small, real, and entirely dependent on the juice. What turns it into a play: nothing widening. Steep prices need the number, not the vibes.
- Holy Cross at Lafayette. The thinnest thing I have, under a point of value. That is noise wearing a bow tie. The math says pass unless the price improves, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to fill a slot.
- Oregon at USC, 7:30 ET. The marquee, and I am watching it rather than playing it. What I want is tempo and second-half legs: which offense is still snapping the ball with urgency in the fourth quarter. That is where live value gets made in this matchup, not in anything I could decide at 6:45.
- Indiana's backfield, for later. The reporting says Turbo Richard likely avoided anything serious after leaving Friday's game against Northwestern and should be back soon. That is not a tonight item. That is an October item, and the kind of thing that moves a number quietly before anybody writes a headline about it.

Florida A&M. Plus money at home with my number a few cents better than the offer. A lean, not a play, and the difference matters: a lean is what I would take if I had to take something, and nobody is making me. Small edges over and over, no heroics. That is the whole picture.
One caution from the day's tape: Texas Tech's Austin Romaine took two interceptions back for touchdowns on consecutive Sam Houston passes. Beautiful football. Terrible input. Do not let a two-play stretch reprice a defense in your head.
