CFB best bets today comes with a short answer: nothing on my board has cleared, and on a Labor Day Monday with exactly one game on the calendar, that is the correct amount of action. This is a radar column, not a slate.

The wire is still shaking off Week 1. The updated FPI top 25 landed this morning, the Clemson at LSU headliner is getting relitigated by everybody with a microphone, and there is a Michigan finish that people are still arguing about because a second appeared on the clock that nobody can explain. Week 1 does that. It hands you 60 minutes of football and dares you to treat it like a season.

The eyeing list

  1. SMU at Florida State, tonight, 7:30 ET. The only game in the building, which means every eyeball and every dollar in the sport funnels into one number. Standalone spots get crowded, and crowded is where soft edges usually go to die. What turns it into a play: a number that treats one week of football as one week of football rather than a verdict.
  2. The Week 2 FPI reshuffle. The model updated this morning, and model movement is the earliest tell you get on which Week 1 results were real and which were theater. What turns it into a play: a team the model likes noticeably more than the room does, in a spot where the room sets the price.
  3. West Virginia getting docked after a win. This is the one I keep circling. The Mountaineers beat Coastal Carolina and the FPI came away less impressed, and that is almost always a second-half efficiency story rather than a scoreboard story. Fans wrestle with it. Models do not. That is a tell, and it usually pays off two or three weeks later when the market is still grading off the W.
  4. Florida A&M at Miami, Thursday. FCS visitor, Thursday night, and the thing worth watching is snap distribution, not the final margin. What turns it into a play: nothing about this game. It is a data-gathering exercise for the Miami rating I will need in October.
  5. Mercyhurst at New Mexico, Friday, 10:00 a.m. ET. A morning kickoff in the Mountain time zone. Body clocks are real, and weird windows are where sloppy openers live.
GameKickoff (ET)What I'm actually watching
SMU at Florida StateMon, 7:30 PMWhether the number overreacts to Week 1
Florida A&M at MiamiThu, 8:00 PMStarter snaps, not the margin
Mercyhurst at New MexicoFri, 10:00 AMMorning kick, body clock, opener quality

The one I lean on

The West Virginia read, and it is a lean, not a play. When a model marks a team down after a victory, the market is usually a week or two behind, still pricing the result instead of the process. I want that gap. I do not have the next number in front of me yet, so I am not touching anything.

Everything here is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where it is legal, and the correct move on a one-game Monday is usually to watch the football.

What I'm watching next: how much the Week 2 FPI shuffle disagrees with the polls, because the disagreements are where soft lines hide all September.
