Here is the honest state of the sport on the third Sunday of September: college football bowl projections this week are close to a coin flip, and the people making them are saying so out loud. The Week 4 projections that landed are being described as more topsy-turvy than they have ever been. That is not a dodge. That is an accurate weather report.
The reason sits in the companion numbers. Thirty-five FBS teams remain unbeaten through Week 3. Thirty-five. That is a huge chunk of the sport still walking around with a clean sheet and a case to make, and it is why the national top 25 conversations shifted again after the weekend and why the trust exercise of the moment is sorting which of those unbeatens are actually good from which ones have simply been handed a kind September.
That is the part nobody wants to hear in the middle of a great Saturday. Most of those undefeated records have not been stress tested yet. Non conference scheduling is a soft place to build a resume, and the bracket math does not care how many wins you have. It cares who you beat. A 3-0 team that has not seen a defense with a pulse and a 3-0 team that survived a road night game look identical in the standings and nothing alike on film.
checked the almanac: this is only the third season of the 12 team bracket, which arrived in 2024 after a decade of the four team format. we are still learning what an at large resume even looks like in September. twelve spots means twice the teams can dream in week 4 and twice as many get their hearts broken in november.
What comes next is the whittling, and it happens fast once conference play gets real. The unbeaten list will not survive October intact. It never does.
Week 4 gets rolling Thursday night when Liberty visits Coastal Carolina, and from there the sorting begins in earnest. The number I am actually tracking is that 35. Watch how quickly it falls.
