Tennessee lost a starting safety to a practice rep. That is the Tennessee Volunteers injury news that came down this morning: Edrees Farooq tore the patellar tendon in his right knee and will miss the entire 2026 season.
If you want to understand why that sentence lands so heavy, look at what the patellar tendon actually does. It anchors the kneecap to the shin. It is the piece of hardware that lets a leg straighten under load, which is the exact thing a safety does every single snap he plays: backpedal, plant, drive downhill on a crossing route. That tendon is the whole job. Tears there are among the longer rehabs in the sport, and nobody who has watched one up close talks about it in weeks.
The part that stings is the setting. No collision, no bad angle in a rivalry game, no highlight anyone will replay. A practice field in the middle of August. That is the cruelest version of it, because it arrives before a single thing has been decided and it takes the whole year with it.
On the field, safety losses cost more than the tackle column suggests. The back end is the communication room of a defense. Somebody has to get the front lined up, spin the coverage late, and clean up the checks when an offense goes tempo and dares you to be wrong out loud.
