Texas Tech landed five-star offensive tackle Austin Attalah, who joined Pat McAfee to make the commitment public. For a program whose entire national identity was built on throwing the football until the scoreboard operator asked for a break, the biggest recruiting win of the cycle is a kid who blocks. Read that twice.

I don't have Attalah's full finalist list or his measurables in front of me yet, and I'm not going to guess at them. What I do know is what a five-star tackle means in the current sport. Elite offensive line talent is the scarcest commodity in college football. Everybody wants one, nobody develops enough of them, and the schools that hoard tackles tend to be the ones playing in December and January. Skill players make the highlight package. Tackles decide whether the highlight package exists.

The context matters here more than the star rating does. Texas Tech spent the last couple of cycles being extremely loud about its willingness to compete at the top of the market for players, and Lubbock has not historically been where the country's premier tackle prospects end up. Joey McGuire's program has been swinging. This one connected.

Checked the almanac: this is the same school that gave the sport Mike Leach's Air Raid, Michael Crabtree's toe-tapper against Texas in 2008, and a lightly recruited quarterback named Patrick Mahomes throwing for 734 yards in a single game against Oklahoma. Texas Tech has always been able to score. Texas Tech has not always been able to protect. The gap between those two sentences is exactly the gap a five-star left tackle is hired to close.

The announcement venue is its own small story. A high school lineman choosing a national television set instead of a hat-on-the-table in a gym tells you how thoroughly the recruiting business has merged with the media business. Ten years ago the offensive line commitment was a paragraph on a message board.

What I'm watching next: whether this holds through signing day, and whether it pulls another lineman with it. Blue-chip tackles travel in packs when a program gets hot.
