The house has been quiet for eight months and I can hear the ice maker again. That ends this week. Before anybody asks me about CFB best bets today, understand what Week 0 actually is: a couple of games, a lot of unknowns, and a market that has fewer honest reps to lean on than any other week of the year. That is where soft numbers live. It is also where bad reads live, and I have been on both sides of that coin.

So this is the radar, not the ledger. Nothing on my board has cleared yet, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to fill a column.

What I'm eyeing in college football before Week 0

  1. Florida State against New Mexico State. FSU comes in ranked 28th nationally in the FPI, which is a polite way of saying the computers think they are good, not scary. The question with this program is never talent, it is which version shows up. What turns it into a play: a number that prices FSU like a top-15 team when the model has them 28th. That is a gap I would mind like it owes me money.
  1. Ole Miss, post-Kiffin. The executive director of the Rebels' NIL collective said FBI agents searched the football offices for recording devices after Kiffin left for LSU. I have covered a lot of messy coaching exits. I have never covered one that involved a bug sweep. What turns it into a play: evidence the noise reached the roster. Staff continuity and portal churn move a team's number more than any headline does.
  1. Kiffin's first LSU install. New coach, new system, new building. First-game offenses under a new play caller are volatile in both directions, which usually means totals before sides. What turns it into a play: a first look where the market prices the offense as if the install is already finished.
  1. The talent-versus-record trap. There is a whole genre of preseason content ranking the two most talented rosters in the country right now. Talent is not schedule and it is not offensive line continuity. What turns it into a play: returning production numbers I trust, not a talking-points list.
  1. Week 0 pricing generally. Fewer games, fewer sharp opinions, more opinions period. That combination has historically produced the widest openers of the season.

The one I lean on most

Florida State. Not a play. A lean, and only because the FPI number and the public's mental picture of that program are not the same number. checked the almanac: FSU went 13-0 in 2023, got left out of the playoff entirely, then went 2-10 the following fall. That is the most violent two-year swing I can remember from a blue blood, and it is exactly why I want the market to tell me where it stands before I do.

CFB best bets today: what has to clear first

Nothing cleared my number this morning, because Week 0 has not given me enough honest information to build one I would defend. When it does, I will show the work in plain language, wins and losses both, nothing deleted, nothing cherry-picked. Until then this stays entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and the sizing is yours and only yours.

What I am watching next: whether FSU's starters are still on the field in the fourth quarter of the opener, and what the reporting out of Oxford says about staff and roster stability once the season actually starts.

You know where to find me.
