  1. Houston adding Kayshon Boutte. The reporting says the Patriots agreed to send Boutte to the Texans for Reed and a draft pick. Depth-piece trades in August rarely move anything on their own, but they tell you where a coaching staff thinks its roster is thin, and Houston clearly went shopping for receiver bodies. What turns it into a play: Boutte carving out real snaps in three-wide sets by the time the games count.
  1. New England on the other side of it. The Patriots let a young receiver go for a player and a pick, which is a front office saying it likes its board more than its depth chart. That is a tell. What turns it into a play: nothing yet, and I'd rather say so than dress it up.
  1. Pittsburgh and the Joey Porter Jr. impasse. Mike McCarthy used the word impasse himself with Porter still on the physically unable to perform list. A corner who is neither practicing nor negotiating is a secondary problem that compounds. What turns it into a play: an early-season passing-game spot where the market prices Pittsburgh's coverage as if Porter is out there.
  1. New Orleans signing Daniel Carlson. A two-time All-Pro kicker landing on a team that needed one is a quiet upgrade in the exact places nobody prices carefully: the fourth-down decisions, the drives that die at the 35 and still get points.

The one I lean on

Baltimore. A lean, not a play, and I want that distinction on the record. My concern is not that the Ravens are a lesser team, it is that they are suddenly a thinner one at the two positions where thin gets exposed fastest. Give me confirmation on Madubuike and I'll have a real number for their next meeting instead of a hunch dressed in a suit.
