Week 1 is the best and worst thing that happens to a handicapper all year. Best because the sport is back, 85 games across five days, 15 of them with a ranked team in the building. Worst because we are all working off last year's roster and this year's guesses. So when you ask about CFB best bets today, my honest answer on a Monday in late August is that nothing has cleared. Not one thing. What I have is a watch list.
That is not me being coy. Openers are the noisiest data in the sport. New coordinators, new quarterbacks, portal rosters that have practiced together for eight weeks and played together for zero. My models are throwing wide error bars at everything, and wide error bars mean I need a bigger gap to act on. Patience is cheap in August. Certainty is not.
CFB best bets today: the four spots on my radar for Thursday
- Colorado at Georgia Tech, Thursday 8:00 PM ET. The marquee kickoff of the week and the one I'll spend the most hours on. Two programs whose identities have swung hard in recent seasons, meeting in Atlanta with everybody's priors stale. What turns it into a play: if my number lands a full touchdown away from where the market settles once the quarterback picture is public. Right now it isn't.
- Idaho at Utah, Thursday 9:00 PM ET. Idaho is a quality FCS outfit, not a body bag, and Utah in September in Salt Lake is its own weather-and-altitude story. This one lives in the total for me, specifically how long the starters stay in. What turns it into a play: clarity on the depth chart by Wednesday.
- UAB at Illinois, Thursday 9:00 PM ET. Group of Five road team into a Big Ten opener at a late window. Late kicks and long trips are where soft numbers hide in Week 1. What turns it into a play: a first-half number that treats UAB like an FCS opponent, which they are decidedly not.
- UMass at Rutgers, Thursday 6:00 PM ET. First kick of the night, which means it gets the least attention and the thinnest handle. Thin markets are where I earn a living. What turns it into a play: a total that hasn't accounted for how a Big Ten team handles the first live tackling of the year.
There is also a cluster of guarantee games on Thursday, Bethune-Cookman into UCF, Arkansas Pine Bluff into Missouri, Eastern Illinois into Minnesota. I look at those for first-half totals only, and I look mostly to pass. Mismatch games price the mismatch. You are rarely getting a gift.
The one I lean on
Colorado at Georgia Tech. Lean, not a play, and I want that word doing real work. I lean toward the game going over expectation on tempo, because both offenses would rather snap it than stand around. That is a feeling with some structure under it, not a number I'd act on yet.
checked the almanac: the last time these two names sat this close together in a national conversation was 1990, when Colorado finished No. 1 in the AP poll and Georgia Tech finished No. 1 in the coaches poll. a split title. two undefeated-ish claims and no playoff to sort it out. thirty-six years later they open a Thursday night in Atlanta.
What I'm watching next: the Wednesday injury and depth-chart chatter out of Boulder and Atlanta, and whether the Rutgers total gets any real attention before kickoff. If something opens up a real gap, I'll write it up with the work shown. If nothing does, the math says pass and I'll say that too. Keep it fun, keep it 21+ where legal, and keep the stakes in the entertainment column.
You know where to find me.
