Last Sunday in August, and the injured list is doing more to shape MLB best bets today than any arm on the slate. Buxton to the 10-day. A Yankees rookie shortstop who dodged the worst news but may not dodge the IL. A Cardinals rookie infielder shut down with wrist tendinitis. This is the part of the season where depth stops being a talking point and starts being a run per game.

Here's what's on the radar. Radar, not a ticket.

What I'm eyeing on the MLB board today

  1. Reds at Cubs, Under 9 (Sun, 7:21 PM ET). The number is offered at plus money and my fair sits at -109. That's a gap that gets my attention on its own. What turns it into a play: the wind. Wrigley in late August is a coin the ballpark flips for you, and I don't have first pitch conditions in front of me yet. Blowing in, I'm interested. Stiff out to left and I fold the ticket before I buy it.
  2. Twins without Byron Buxton (Detroit at Minnesota, Mon, 6:41 PM ET). Minnesota handled the White Sox 5-1 earlier today, so the offense isn't broken. But the hip impingement takes their best all-around bat and their best center fielder out of the equation for at least ten days. What turns it into a play: how the total reacts. If the market treats a Buxton-less lineup like a rounding error, the under side of that game gets live.
  3. George Lombard Jr., Yankees at Angels (Mon, 9:39 PM ET). No structural damage in the right knee is the good news. The IL is still on the table, and that's a different lineup in Anaheim. I want the lineup card before I want a price.
  4. Padres moneyline at +150 against my fair of +141. The biggest raw price gap on my sheet. It's dog money on a team I have closer to a coin flip than the board does. What turns it into a play: confirmed starters. Until then it's a number I like, not a number I've taken.
  5. Esteury Ruiz Under 0.5 Hits (Miami at Washington, Mon, 6:41 PM ET). Small edge, lean tier, and entirely contingent on how he's used. A prop that dies the moment he doesn't start.

Padres ML+150+1413.68%

Orioles ML-142-1440.45%

That last one is on the list to show my work, not to sell you anything. Half a percent is noise wearing a nice shirt.

The one I lean on most

The Under at Wrigley. Getting plus money on a side my own number makes a modest favorite is the cleanest gap on the page, and the mechanism is simple: two lineups that don't scare me and a total the market set a tick high. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but check the flags first. Weather is the whole caveat and I won't pretend otherwise.

What I'm watching next: the wind at Wrigley, the Twins lineup card Monday, and whether Lombard's knee costs him a roster spot. Nothing has fully cleared yet. That's fine. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and a lot of days that end in a pass.

Baseball's a long season and so is the bankroll. Entertainment with variance, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER. You know where to find me.
