Last Friday of August, fourteen games on the card, and the thing I love about this stretch is that nobody is playing out the string yet. Everybody still thinks they're alive. That's when the boards get honest and the crowd doesn't.

So here's what's actually on my radar for MLB best bets today, and I want to be clear up front: this is the Read, not a tip. Two of these are whispers. One of them has some meat on it.

What I'm eyeing on tonight's MLB board

  1. Pirates at Cardinals, over 7.5. My number wants this total north, and the offer is sitting at plus money while my de-vigged fair sits on the other side of even. That is roughly eighteen cents of gap staring at me. Mind that gap like it owes you money. What turns it into a play: the price holding through lineup cards, because the moment it ticks toward pick-em the edge is gone and I'm just another guy rooting for runs.
  1. Padres at Tampa Bay, San Diego moneyline. Small, clean, honest. My fair lands two cents under the offer, which is the kind of edge that pays a mortgage over four hundred bets and absolutely nothing over four. What turns it into a play: the number staying put or drifting my way.
  1. Mariners at Toronto, Seattle moneyline. Thinnest one on the sheet, barely a whisper above fair, and it's dragging a story with it. The word out of Toronto all season has been about Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and his missing home power, and an insider spent this week saying out loud what the box scores have been saying quietly for months. A middle-of-the-order bat that isn't slugging at home changes what a road dog needs to survive. What turns it into a play: a bigger number, not a better story.
  1. Cubs and Reds, Saturday afternoon at Wrigley. Chicago activated Matt Shaw off the injured list after two months with a sprained left hand, so I'm watching the lineup card before I watch anything else. Two months out is two months of timing to find. Nothing on my sheet for that one yet, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
  1. Dodgers at Detroit, 6:41. Chris Sale spent part of the morning on a podcast reliving a shutout he threw against these Dodgers, which is a fun listen and worth exactly zero cents at the window. Nothing cleared here. Moving on.

The one I lean on

The Pittsburgh-St. Louis total, and it isn't close. When the market is asking me to lay juice on a side I'm being handed at plus money, that gap is the whole argument. The honest caveat: totals are the most weather-dependent, bullpen-dependent number in the sport, and a late scratch or a stiff wind rewrites my sheet in one text alert. Small edges over and over, no heroics. That's the picture.

The other two are watch-list, not action. If they don't move, they don't move.

What I'm watching next: that Cubs lineup card Saturday afternoon, and whether the 7.5 in St. Louis holds its price. Baseball is entertainment with variance attached, 21 and up where it's legal, and if it ever stops being fun there's help at 1-800-GAMBLER. You know where to find me. Just ask Big Mike. BOL.
