Cam Schlittler dropped his ERA to 1.95 and took over the major league lead Sunday afternoon, the Yankees shut out the Mets 2-0 to close in on a record 61st postseason berth, and the MLB betting news today that actually travels off that game is a futures story rather than a side. Two teams in one city, one ace, and a Cy Young race that suddenly reads like a formality.

The reporting has him as the clear-cut favorite for the AL Cy Young, and his own manager walked out of the building floating MVP, which is the sort of thing managers say in September and also, this year, not obviously silly.
Here is the honest caveat before anyone falls in love with the MVP branch. Voters have historically needed a pitcher to be both dominant and unavoidable to hand him a most valuable player trophy, and there are only a couple of turns left to make that case. The Cy Young argument is a math argument and the math is already made. The MVP argument is a persuasion argument. Different animal.
One more thing that matters for the board and gets forgotten every September: he threw Sunday. The Yankees are in Minnesota at 7:41 ET and their best pitcher is watching. The Twins got run over 9-2 by Cleveland on Sunday, so the shape of that game is two clubs with very different Octobers ahead of them and neither one running out its headliner.
The injuries that actually move lineups
Rafael Devers is done for the year with a core muscle injury and may need surgery. That is the biggest bat in the San Francisco order gone, and the Giants open at St. Louis at 7:46 ET having to score runs some other way. The Cardinals just squeezed a 3-1 win out of the White Sox on Alec Burleson's bases-clearing double, which tells you the run environment that series is likely to live in.
Baltimore put Kyle Bradish on the 15-day IL with lower abdominal discomfort, effectively ending his season. The Orioles are at the Mets at 7:11 ET after getting thumped 8-1 in Toronto, where Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had four hits including his first regular-season home run at home since August 2025. A year and change between homers in your own ballpark. Baseball is a strange, patient sport.
Boston activated Willson Contreras and hit him cleanup in a 4-1 win over Kansas City, with Nick Seigler heading to the IL. That game opened with Payton Tolle throwing an immaculate inning, nine pitches, nine strikes.

The Dodgers lost 6-4 to Miami and now go to Cincinnati at 6:41 ET, where the Reds just avoided a winless road trip on a Eugenio Suarez three-run shot in the sixth and a Tyler Stephenson sac fly in the eighth. Great American in mid-September with a Los Angeles bullpen that has been leaned on hard is exactly the kind of spot where the total is the interesting side and the moneyline is the trap.
Washington completed a sweep in Anaheim on a four-run eighth, and the Angels now have to go 7-6 the rest of the way to avoid the first 100-loss season in club history. Seattle comes in at 9:39 ET off an 8-7 loss to the Athletics. Two clubs playing very different kinds of tired.
And Atlanta heads to Wrigley at 7:41 ET after Philadelphia hung a seven-run eighth on them, Alec Bohm's two-run double the one that broke it. Bullpen usage in a seven-run inning is not free the next day. That is a tell worth pricing.
What I'm watching next
Nothing cleared my number this morning. No qualifying plays on the board, and I am not going to invent one for a Monday in September because the schedule has ten games on it. The Dodgers total in Cincinnati is the first number I'll check when lineups post, and the second is whatever Atlanta's bullpen looks like after that eighth inning in Philadelphia.
