Thursday is almost in the books and nothing on my board cleared today. That's fine. The honest version of this column is not a slot machine that pays out every morning. Sometimes the work is just getting the list ready before Friday's slate opens up.

And Friday is a full one. Seventeen games, deadline rumors buzzing, pitching matchups worth a second look. Here is what I am tracking.

MLB Picks Today: 5 Spots on the Radar

  1. Colorado Rockies @ Milwaukee Brewers (Fri, 4:11 PM ET). The fantasy community is already screaming about streaming a pitcher against Colorado at home, and that instinct almost always has a real-ball echo. The Rockies carry one of the weakest road offenses in the league, and any time a pitcher gets that matchup outside of Coors the run-environment math shifts hard. What turns this into a play: the Brewers starter is a confirmed home arm, no fatigue flag, and the total opens somewhere I can work with. I want to see the number before I say anything more.
  1. Toronto Blue Jays @ Boston Red Sox (Fri, 7:16 PM ET). The reporting out of Boston has the Red Sox running hot right now, and word around the league has Toronto in seller mode ahead of the deadline. A seller playing out the string on the road against a team with momentum is a live spot in any sport. The tell I need: does the line respect the Blue Jays enough that there is value on Boston, or does the market already have this priced chalk? I will be watching the opener.
  1. Los Angeles Angels @ San Francisco Giants (Fri, 10:16 PM ET). This one is on the radar for a different reason. The reporting says Boston views Angels shortstop Zach Neto as a strong trade fit, which means Anaheim may be in full deadline-seller mode. A team processing a potential roster teardown, on the road, late night, against a Giants club playing home ball. That is a soft spot on paper. I do not have a number yet and I will not pretend I do, but the situation is interesting enough that it earns a slot on the list.
  1. Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Mets (Fri, 7:11 PM ET). No deadline noise needed here. These are two of the best teams in the National League and the Mets at home is never a throwaway. The question the reporting keeps raising is the Mets' pitching depth and how thin the margin is when they need arms. If the starter matchup sets up cleanly, this could be a total or side worth a look. Situation first, number second.
  1. Atlanta Braves futures check. Not a Friday game play, but worth flagging. Chris Sale went out Thursday and struck out eleven, the Braves hit four home runs, and they edged the Padres 6-5. That is a rotation ace performing like one. If Atlanta's futures price has not moved to reflect a Sale who is dealing, there may be a small gap between perception and reality. Worth checking the board over the weekend.

The One I Lean On Most

If I had to pick the spot I am most interested in right now, it is Colorado at Milwaukee. The pitcher-streamers do not usually lie about the underlying matchup. Road Rockies, a home arm who did not throw last night, and a run environment that favors the home side. I am not ready to call it a play because I have not seen the number open. But that is the one I will be watching when Friday morning gets here.

Nothing cleared my number this morning. That is the honest answer and the only kind I give.

The deadline is August 3rd. The noise gets louder every day between now and then. Some of that noise will move lines before the public catches up. Mind the gap like it owes you money.
