The NBA 2026-27 season preview series started this morning, one team profile every weekday through Sept. 18, and whoever set the running order did not ease anybody in. The first name up was Milwaukee, and the question attached to it was blunt: how does this roster fare in Season 1 without Giannis.
I don't have the full terms or the roster sheet in front of me yet, so I'm not going to pretend I know exactly what Milwaukee looks like on opening night. What I do know is that a preview series can tell you what a league considers its live wire, and "Season 1 without Giannis" is a phrase that reorders an entire conference in six words.
Start with what he was there. Milwaukee took him 15th in 2013, a teenager almost nobody in the building could have projected into what he became. He won back-to-back MVPs in 2019 and 2020, added Defensive Player of the Year in 2020, and then closed out the 2021 Finals against Phoenix with 50 points in Game 6. That was the franchise's second championship and its first since 1971. Twelve years of a small-market team being permanently relevant, all of it traceable to one draft pick.
checked the almanac: the last time Milwaukee lost a player of that magnitude, it was Kareem, traded to the Lakers in 1975. The Bucks did not reach another Finals until 2021. Forty-six years is not a prediction, it is a warning about how long the hole can stay open when you don't fill it fast.
So the interesting part of this preview isn't the win projection. It's whether Milwaukee treats this as a retool with a spine or a full teardown, because those are two completely different franchises wearing the same jersey. Every team that has watched a foundational star leave has faced that same fork, and the ones that picked wrong spent a decade in the middle. The middle is the worst place in this league.
