ESPN dropped its rivalry rankings for the 2026-27 season and slotted the Thunder Spurs rivalry at No. 2, which is the kind of list item that gets shrugged at in September and remembered in May. I don't have the full ranking in front of me yet, just where these two landed. Second is plenty high enough to talk about.
What makes it land is that this isn't a manufactured rivalry. It's an inherited one. Oklahoma City and San Antonio met in the Western Conference finals in 2012, when the Spurs won the first two games and then lost four straight to a Thunder team built around Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden. They met again in 2014, and that time Gregg Popovich's group closed it out and went on to take the title. Two conference finals in three years between the same two franchises. That's not a marketing department's idea. That's a receipt.

The other has the most singular physical talent in basketball and a front office with a long history of knowing exactly what to do with time.
That's the whole appeal. It's champion versus challenger without either side being old. Both cores are young enough that this doesn't have to be a two-year window, and both franchises have shown they'll be patient rather than panicked. Rivalries need repetition to become real, and repetition needs both teams to stay good.
What I'm watching is whether these two actually meet with something on the line. Rankings are opinions. Playoff series are the thing that turns an opinion into history, and this one already has two chapters written.
