Let's be honest about where we are before anyone gets excited: nothing cleared my number this morning, so my CFB best bets today list is empty and this column is a radar sweep, not a slate. Week 1 is the softest and the most dangerous market of the year at the same time. Every team is a rumor.

That's the whole charm of September. We have depth charts nobody has seen play a snap, new staffs installing new offenses, and a market pricing all of it off last year's ghosts and a summer of message board optimism. I love it. I also respect it enough not to force anything.

Here's what's on the radar.

What I'm watching on the CFB Week 1 board

  1. Clemson at LSU, 7:30 PM ET. GameDay set up in Baton Rouge, the crowd got a Lainey Wilson cover and a whole lot of feelings about it, and Lane Kiffin closed a loud week by publicly burying a hatchet with Nick Saban on the set. Great theater. What I actually care about is whether a first-year LSU offense looks installed by the second series or whether we get the classic Week 1 sputter. That's the tell. If it points to sloppiness, the total is where I'd live, not the side.
  2. Western Michigan at Michigan, 7:00 PM ET. MAC visitor into Michigan Stadium is not a mystery in terms of who wins. The question is always the same one in these: how long do the starters play, and does the fourth quarter turn into a walkthrough. Second-half markets are where these get interesting, and I want the first half on tape before I touch anything.
  3. Wyoming at Colorado State, 6:00 PM ET. The Border War for the Bronze Boot, first game of the year, sitting in the early window while everyone else is watching the GameDay set. Rivalry games compress margins. They always have. I want the quarterback situation confirmed for both sides before I take this seriously.
  4. FIU at South Florida, 7:00 PM ET. A 7 PM Tampa kickoff in early September is its own opponent. Heat, humidity, and a G5 body game that can either be a laugher or a grind depending on how the visitor holds up in the third quarter.
  5. Maine at Appalachian State. Not a betting spot for me, just a thing I like: Maine stepping up to the FBS level for the first meeting between the programs. Kidd Brewer is a rough place to do that.

The one I lean on most

Colorado State and Wyoming. A rivalry game with a trophy attached, played by two teams who know each other's tendencies better than any coordinator wants to admit, tends to stay closer than the projections say. That's a lean, not a play. It becomes a play if my number separates from the posted price by more than Week 1 noise, and not one inch before.

checked the almanac: LSU has already had one enormous night against Clemson this decade, the 42-25 title win in January 2020. Different era, same stadium noise.

What I'm watching next: the Border War quarterback confirmations, and how LSU's offense looks on its opening two drives. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and it's entertainment with variance attached. 21+ where legal, and 1-800-GAMBLER is there if it stops being fun. You know where to find me.
