The Alabama Florida State rivalry used to be a scheduling flex. Now it is personal, and the reason is a coaching search that never quite closed the way everyone assumed it would.
The thread running through this one: Mike Norvell nearly left Tallahassee for Tuscaloosa after Nick Saban retired. He didn't. He stayed, and then his team beat Alabama in the meeting before this one, which means the rematch arrives carrying a grudge nobody drew up on a whiteboard. That is the part I find fascinating. We spend December and January treating the carousel like a business story, spreadsheets and buyouts and consultant language, and then eighteen months later it shows up on a field as a guy who really, really wants to win a specific football game.
Checked the almanac: Saban walked away in January 2024 after six national titles at Alabama, and the sport is still rearranging its furniture around the hole he left. Norvell's near-miss is the cleanest evidence yet. One yes instead of a no and two programs look completely different right now.
It is not the only rivalry where an address change turned into a vendetta. Lane Kiffin returns to Oxford with LSU, and remarks he made in May about the culture at his old program, a comparison to segregation, have resurfaced ahead of the trip. Coaching moves used to cool off over a season. These ones marinate.
Meanwhile the broadcast slate tells you exactly what the networks believe. Texas, Missouri and Notre Dame get the prime real estate, Arch Manning gets the cameras, and games like Indiana against Western Kentucky and UTSA against Texas fill the regional windows. Rankings and star power drive the schedule. That is not new, but the gap between the marquee and the middle keeps widening.
The number that stuck with me most had nothing to do with a scoreboard. Ticket demand for Georgia and Oklahoma is real enough that fans are locking in seats years out. Expansion sold us a bunch of new rivalries on paper. People are buying them in advance, which is the most honest review the SEC's realignment has gotten.
What I'm watching next: whether Norvell's Florida State can back up the upset, and whether Kiffin's return to Oxford stays about football.
