The Denver Broncos news making the rounds this morning is a comparison, not a transaction: the idea that the 2026 group is built off the same three-part recipe that carried the 2015 team to Super Bowl 50. United front office. Shutdown defense. Clutch play when the game gets tight. It is a flattering comparison and a heavy one, because of what the original actually required.
Go back and look at that team honestly. The 2015 Broncos led the NFL in total defense and in sacks with 52, and they needed every one of them, because the offense spent the year in a ditch. Peyton Manning was benched midseason, Brock Osweiler started, Manning came back in Week 17 and then threw for 141 yards in the Super Bowl and retired anyway. Denver beat New England 20-18 in the AFC Championship Game and Carolina 24-10 at Levi's Stadium. Von Miller took the MVP by ripping the ball out of Cam Newton's hands twice. John Elway in the chair, Gary Kubiak on the headset, Wade Phillips calling a defense that ate people alive.
So when someone says same formula, understand what is being claimed. Not a style. A survival mechanism. That team won a title with a bottom-tier passing attack because the defense turned every opponent drive into a coin flip and the pass rush closed games in the fourth quarter. That is not a plan you choose. That is a plan that works when you have the personnel and gets you 8-9 when you do not.
What makes it more than a talking point is the alignment part, which is the least glamorous and the most real. The 2015 team had a general manager, a head coach and a coordinator pulling the same direction through a very public quarterback mess. Most buildings crack under that. That one did not.
What comes next is the best possible lab for it. Denver is at Kansas City tonight at 8:15 ET, September at Arrowhead, the exact environment where a defense either travels or gets exposed on third down. I keep thinking about what New York did to Dallas on Sunday night, 9-for-11 on third down, a defense getting nickeled to death without a single highlight to show for it. That is how the formula dies.
