Detroit Lions injury news just cost anybody holding a Lions ticket the best number on the board. Two offensive line starters are out for Thursday night in Buffalo, and our board has Buffalo up from -3.5 to -5.5 with Detroit's moneyline drifting from +153 all the way out to +208. If you wanted the Lions, you are now paying two full points more than you would have. Right through the 3.

The specifics are short and they are not good for Detroit: Christian Mahogany (hip) and Blake Miller (knee) have both been ruled out ahead of the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff in Buffalo. Two starters, one short week, no Sunday to get healthy.

How the Detroit Lions injury news moved the Bills line

Here is the board as of the desk's 4:30 p.m. ET snapshot, open against now.

Bills spread-3.5 -110-5.5 -105
Lions spread+3 +105+5 -101
Lions moneyline+153+208 (novig)
Bills moneyline-167-212 (novig)
Total52.5 -11254.5 -108

Two points of spread is a heavy lift for two offensive linemen. That is the honest starting point. Short-week markets are thin, the money that shows up is confident, and a Thursday number will move further and faster on the same information than a Sunday number would. Some of this is the news. Some of this is a market with fewer hands on it.

But the piece I keep circling is the total. It went up. Two points, from 52.5 to 54.5, at the same time the favorite got two points bigger. When a team loses protection up front, the reflex move is to shade the total down, fewer sustained drives, more three-and-outs, shorter game. This board did the opposite. The money is not pricing a slog. It is pricing Buffalo getting the ball back a lot and doing something with it. That's a tell, and it is a more interesting one than the spread move.

Is there a buy-back on Detroit at +5.5?

Maybe. That's the most honest word I have. A number that travels from 3 to 5.5 in one direction usually leaves a little something on the other side, because the last half point of a move like this is bought by people reacting to the headline rather than to the film. Detroit at +5.5 or better is the side I would be eyeing if the number keeps inflating.

What kills it: the reason is real. This is not a phantom move. Two interior and edge protection starters out against that Buffalo front, on three days of prep, with no practice week to build a plan around the replacements, is a genuine reason to shade the number. And I do not have the replacement combination in front of me yet, which matters more than anything else in this paragraph. A veteran sliding over is a different game than a rookie getting his first real snaps on a Thursday night in Orchard Park.

The prediction venues do not give me much either. Kalshi has Detroit around 35 percent, Polymarket around 33, against a de-vigged +208 that sits right about 32.5. Nobody at that table disagrees enough to be worth a phone call. Mind the gap like it owes you money, except this gap owes me nothing.

So: nothing cleared my number this afternoon. The Bills at -5.5 is a fair price on a real injury story, not a soft line, and the Lions at +5.5 is a lean I want confirmed before it is anything more.

What I'm watching next

The final Thursday designations for the rest of the Detroit line, first. Then whether -5.5 holds or gets bought back to -5, because a number that drifts back is a market admitting it overshot. And the total, which has already climbed to 54.5 and is telling a story about Buffalo possessions, not Detroit protection. If it keeps going, that is the number I trust most in this game.

Keep it entertainment, keep it inside what you can lose on a Thursday, 21+ where legal. Variance does not care that you read the injury report first.
