Thursday in September has a particular smell to it. One game, prime time, a full country watching the same field, and a board that is still mostly guesswork because everybody has exactly one week of real football to work with. That is the whole tension of NFL best bets today: the market is pricing a season off a sample the size of a postcard, and I am doing the same thing, just slower and with more coffee.

So here is the radar. Most of it has not cleared. One thing has.

What I'm eyeing on the NFL board today

  1. Detroit at Buffalo, tonight, 8:15 ET. My desk has Detroit's moneyline fair around +200 and I can get +210. That is not a windfall, it is about three and a half percent of edge, the kind you collect over and over with no heroics. What would turn it into more than a lean: nothing. This is the only item on the page a real number supports, and a modest one at that.
  2. The Chargers offense, Raiders in town Sunday afternoon. Mike McDaniel said out loud that the offense did not play up to the vision in the loss to Arizona and that he was caught off-guard by it. He also said he thinks it is short term. I believe him more than the market will. What turns it into a play: a Chargers number that prices Week 1 as the truth instead of the outlier.
  3. New England hosting Pittsburgh, 1 ET Sunday. TreVeyon Henderson says he is ready to go after missing the opener with an ankle. Rookie back returning, same team's run game that operated without him, and the reporting out of Foxborough treats it as real. What turns it into a play: how the totals and team-side numbers treat a Patriots offense that gets a piece back nobody has actually seen at full speed yet.
  4. Chicago hosting Minnesota, 1 ET Sunday. The film-study crowd is walking back the Bears takes, and the loudest voice in that argument said flatly that Caleb Williams and that offense were awesome. Public sentiment on Chicago has whiplash built in. What turns it into a play: a soft line in either direction, because rooms like this one tend to overcorrect.
  5. Seattle at Arizona, 4:25 Sunday. The Cardinals are the team that made McDaniel apologize for a game plan. That is the kind of win that gets a division dog re-rated a little too enthusiastically. Watching, not touching.

The one I lean on

Detroit's moneyline, and I want to be precise about the word lean. Three and a half percent of edge on a road dog in Buffalo is a small, honest number, not a thesis. My fair price and the offered price are close enough that if it moves a dime the wrong way, I am out and I will say so.

checked the almanac: in November 2022, the Bills played two straight home-ish games at Ford Field, the snow-relocated Browns game and then Thanksgiving against Detroit, and won them both by a combined nine points. Buffalo is usually right. Rarely by much.

What I'm watching next is the Chargers number for Sunday. If it prices one bad afternoon as a trend, that is my spot. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and 1-800-GAMBLER exists for a reason.

Nothing else cleared this morning. You know where to find me.
