First football Saturday of the year, and I sat here with a coffee and a legal pad and wrote down almost nothing worth acting on. That is the correct outcome. When people ask about NFL best bets today in the middle of August, the honest answer is that preseason gives you tells, not tickets, and confusing the two in Week 1 is how you fund somebody's roof.
So this is the radar, not the slate. Nothing on my board cleared this morning. Here is what I am tracking anyway.
NFL best bets today: the eyeing list
- Kyler Murray running Minnesota's offense. He got his first game action since being named the Vikings' starter, and it ended in a field goal in a 13-10 win over the Giants. A field goal. That tells me the install is on page one, which is exactly where it should be. What would turn it into a play: Murray with the first team for a full series or two against somebody's actual starting defense, so I can see whether the fit is real or a press-conference fit.
- Buffalo's new building. Josh Allen threw a touchdown in the Bills' new stadium in a 29-14 win over Carolina, and my first thought was not about Allen. It was that I have no idea how this place plays yet. Wind, sound, sightlines, how the ball travels late in the year. Nobody has a season of data on it. What would turn it into a play: a couple of games of real weather readings before I price a single Buffalo home total.
- Arizona's rookie backfield. Jeremiyah Love is down a week with a sore ankle he picked up against the Raiders. A week in August is nothing for the player and everything for the reps behind him. What would turn it into a play: who takes those snaps with the ones, and whether that usage sticks when Love is back.
- Cleveland's quarterback room after a 34-10 loss in Chicago. Deshaun Watson led two early scoring drives, then Shedeur Sanders threw an ugly one in the fourth. A 24-point preseason margin is noise. The snap distribution is the signal, and I want another week of it before I believe anything.
- Seattle's secondary getting expensive. Devon Witherspoon and the Seahawks agreed to a four-year, $132 million extension. Continuity in a good coverage unit is one of the quieter season-long inputs there is. Nothing to do with it in August. Everything to do with it in November.
the one I lean on most
Murray in Minnesota. A lean, clearly not a play. checked the almanac: he went first overall in 2019 and took offensive rookie of the year that fall, and seven years later he is opening a new chapter as somebody else's starter. That is a genuinely interesting football story before it is ever a number. I need to see him operate against a real defense first, and until then the math says pass.
One more note, no angle attached: Jamal Adams was carted to the locker room in his Vikings preseason debut. I do not have anything beyond that, and I hope it is nothing.
