Wednesday in late September is my favorite day of the football week. Nobody has played yet, everybody is telling a small fib about a knee, and the only honest voices in the building are the injury report and the number. One thing on my card has actually beaten my fair price. Everything else is still a note in the margin.

Also, somewhere in today's pile, the England captain confirmed he is serious about kicking field goals after his soccer career ends. I have no idea how to price that. I love it anyway.

NFL best bets today: what's on my radar

  1. Packers ML vs. Atlanta, Thursday 8:15 ET. My number says Green Bay should be a shade under -280 to win the game. It's offered at -250. That gap is about three points of edge, and it's the only thing today that has cleared. More on it below.
  2. Chargers at Buffalo, Sunday 1:00. Two real tells stacked up. Buffalo lost a defensive lineman indefinitely after an appendectomy, and the Chargers reversed course on putting their tight end with the forearm injury on IR. Teams don't un-IR a guy on a whim. That's a tell that somebody in that building thinks he's back sooner than the initial read. I don't have a priced side yet. I want the Chargers' practice participation Thursday and Friday before I do.
  3. Vikings at Tampa Bay, Sunday 4:05. Minnesota's backfield is genuinely thin: the starter is working through a knee, the backup is on IR. What turns this into a play is who takes the early-down work and how the total reacts to it. A run game held together with tape usually shows up in third-down distance before it shows up in anything else.
  4. Titans at Giants, Sunday 1:00. The reporting says Jaxson Dart is headed for season-ending knee surgery, which is a rotten break for a young quarterback, and it hands the offense back to Jameis Winston. Different operator, different variance, different game script. I don't want the side. I want to see where the total sits once the market digests it.
  5. Ravens at Cowboys in Rio, Sunday 4:25. Lamar Jackson says he isn't thinking about the field at Maracanã. Checked the almanac: the league has been staging regular season games abroad since Cardinals-49ers at Estadio Azteca in 2005, and the surface question comes up nearly every time. Travel plus turf is a skill-position variable, not a spread variable, in my experience. Still watching it.

The one I lean on

Green Bay. Offered -250, my fair sits near -279, and that's roughly three percent of edge on the money line for a home favorite on a short week against a division-adjacent visitor. It's a lean, not a play, and it's not a big one. This is the small-edges-over-and-over business, no heroics, and a favorite at that price still loses plenty of Thursdays. Mind the gap like it owes you money, and keep it the size of entertainment money, because that's what it is. 21+ where legal.

Next number I'm tracking: the Chargers' Friday practice report, and whether the Vikings' backfield news moves their total off its opener.

You know where to find me.
