Quiet Sunday at the desk, which is a strange sentence to type in September. The only kickoff I have circled is Wednesday night in Seattle, Patriots at Seahawks, 8:20 ET, and everything my model spit out this morning points at that one game. So that is where the eyeing goes.

Quick housekeeping before anyone gets excited about a Broncos angle: the Broncos in this morning's biggest story are the Western Michigan Broncos, still sore about a second that got put back on the clock in Ann Arbor. Their president said Sunday he didn't discern anything unfair about the replay decision. Gracious man. Different sport, different desk.

What I'm eyeing for NFL best bets today

  1. George Holani, under 11.5 receiving yards. Offered at -116, my fair number is way down at -733. That is not a small gap, that is a canyon. It turns into a play if the route participation I'm modeling holds through Wednesday's inactives and Seattle's backfield reads the way I think it will.
  2. TreVeyon Henderson, over 7.5 rush attempts. A volume prop, which means I only have to be right about touches, not efficiency. Offered -106 against a -165 fair. Confirmation of a lead or co-lead role in the New England backfield turns this from lean to play.
  3. Terrance Ferguson, under 1.5 receptions. Plus money at 120 against a -113 fair. Young tight ends in Week 1 are usually blocking more than they are running seams. I want a look at the personnel usage before I do anything but watch.
  4. Drake Maye, over 1.5 passing touchdowns. The smallest edge on the board, 135 offered against a 114 fair, and it lives entirely on game script. Seattle at home in a night game is not a soft place to go looking for two scoring throws.

The one I lean on

Henderson over 7.5 attempts. And I want to explain why it is not the Holani number, because the Holani number is four times bigger.

When a receiving-yards under grades at a fair price implying somewhere near 88 percent, one of two things is true. Either the market has not caught up to a role that barely exists, or my route input is stale and the market knows something I don't. That's a tell, and it cuts both ways. A price that generous in Week 1, when everybody's usage data is a projection wearing a costume, deserves a day of watching, not a stampede.

Henderson is the cleaner mechanism. Rush attempts are a workload question, and workload questions get answered by depth charts and practice reports, not by hoping. Small edges over and over, no heroics.

What I'm watching next

The Wednesday injury and participation reports out of both buildings, and whether the Holani number holds or gets corrected overnight. If it stays where it is once the roles are public, it stops being suspicious and starts being an edge.

Nothing here is a play yet. That's the honest version. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where it's legal, and if it stops feeling like fun, 1-800-GAMBLER exists for a reason.

You know where to find me. BOL.
