Nothing cleared my number this morning, and that is the honest lead for NFL best bets today: I am in reading mode, not ticket-writing mode. Week 1 is the week the market knows the least and acts the most certain, which is exactly why I sit on my hands for another day or two and let the practice reports do the arguing for me.

Here is what is on the radar.

What I'm eyeing in the NFL this week

  1. Alec Pierce, healthy, for the Colts opener in Baltimore. Word came down Monday that Pierce "should be good to go" after offseason ankle surgery, straight from the head coach. That matters more than a fourth receiver usually does, because Pierce is the vertical element in that offense. A defense that can play the intermediate stuff without honoring the top of the route tree is a different defense. What turns it into a play: Pierce clearing the week with no designation, and a total that still looks like it was set when he was a question mark.
  2. Tyler Smith to injured reserve after thumb surgery. Dallas loses its starting left guard for a stretch, not a week. Interior offensive line is the least sexy injury on any wire and one of the most predictive: it shows up as pressure up the middle, which is the pressure quarterbacks cannot climb out of. What turns it into a play: seeing who slides in, and whether the market treats a guard like a guard or like a rounding error. Usually the latter. That's a tell.
  3. Patriots at Seahawks, Wednesday night. A long piece dropped Monday on Mike Vrabel's standing inside that locker room after a turbulent offseason, with current and former players describing relationships that held. I take culture reporting with tongs, but cross-country road openers into a loud building have a long history of getting priced as automatic. What turns it into a play: a number that treats New England as free money.
  4. 49ers at Rams, Thursday night. Division game under the lights to open a season. I want the injury reports first, both of them, before I have any opinion worth typing.
  5. The Titans offensive line talking about an "aggressive, enforcing mindset." Every line in America says this in September. I have never once cashed a ticket on a mindset. Filed, not chased.

The one I lean on most

The Pierce spot. Not a play, a lean. Baltimore and Indianapolis with a healthy deep threat is a game my number has more points in than I expected to be writing about in early September, and the fastest way for a Week 1 total to be stale is a receiver going from surgery rehab to "good to go" on a Monday. If the number stays put through the week, we talk. If it has already moved, I was late and I will say so.

That is the whole discipline: small edges over and over, no heroics, and a lot of Mondays where the math says pass. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and if the fun ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.
