Nothing has cleared yet, and that is the honest way to open an NFL betting news today column written on a Saturday with the board still forming. What I have instead is a notebook, four spots, and a pass protection problem in Kansas City I cannot stop turning over.

Saturday in September is my favorite kind of quiet. College ball on one screen, injury reports trickling onto the other, fourteen NFL games sitting out there Sunday and Monday like a table nobody has set. I do not have plays. I have suspicions.   1. Cooper Rush's back. Falcons at Steelers, Sunday 1:00 ET. Word came down this afternoon that Rush had back spasms and is still slated to start in Pittsburgh. Back spasms and quarterback are two things that do not belong in the same sentence. Everything a passer does starts in the lower half, rotation, drive, and the deep ball is always the first thing to go. Standing in against that Pittsburgh front at anything less than full is no way to spend an afternoon. What turns it into a play: the pregame look. If he is cutting it loose in warmups, this is a footnote. If Atlanta starts using the word managing, that's a tell, and the game gets shorter, slower and more run-heavy than anybody expected.
  1. An undrafted rookie at left tackle. Broncos at Chiefs, Monday 8:15 ET. Josh Simmons is out for the opener and Kansas City is set to hand Kahlil Benson, undrafted, the job of keeping Patrick Mahomes clean in his return. Against Denver, whose entire personality is getting to the quarterback. That is the single loudest mechanism on this weekend's board. What turns it into a play: confirmation Benson takes the first snap rather than a shuffle inside, and a sense of how much chip help Kansas City is willing to spend on him.
  1. The Raiders' target tree. Dolphins at Raiders, Sunday 4:25 ET. Michael Mayer got three years and $45 million while filling in for an injured Brock Bowers. You do not pay the understudy like that unless you plan to feed him. Honest answer on this one: I want to see it once before I price it, so this is a Week 2 idea wearing a Week 1 jersey.
  1. Houston's offense minus the noise. Bills at Texans, Sunday 1:00 ET. C.J. Stroud and the Texans tabled extension talks until after the season. I do not handicap contracts. A quarterback playing for a deal is a storyline, not an edge. What I am actually watching is Houston's protection in a 1 ET September kickoff, because that is the thing that decides whether this game is a track meet or a slog.

Monday night, and it is the tackle spot. A returning franchise quarterback, an undrafted rookie on his blind side, and a Denver defense built to punish exactly that. A widely circulated season simulation has the Broncos at 7-10 and out of the field, which tells me the public is not exactly lining up to back them. Mind the gap like it owes you money.

Lean, not a play. Nothing on my board today, and I am not going to manufacture one because it is Saturday and I have a column.

checked the almanac: rush started five straight for dallas in 2022 and went 4-1, so the clipboard label never quite fit him. sore back is a different conversation.

What I am watching next: the inactive lists ninety minutes before the 1 ET window. That is when Rush's real status and Kansas City's line combination stop being speculation. Whatever survives that, I will run through my numbers and tell you what came out the other side, wins and losses both.
