Shanahan swatted down the notion that McCaffrey is sitting practice to squeeze out a new deal, saying the team is simply being careful with its star back. I believe him. I also file it. A back who gets managed in August tends to get managed in November, and that shows up in team rushing volume and in who's actually on the field near the goal line. What turns it into a play: a clean return to full team work, then a look at how the reps get split when they matter.
  2. The Chargers' interior offensive line. Tyler Biadasz was carted off after a 49ers defensive tackle fell into his left leg during joint practice. The center sets the protection calls. Lose him and everything from third-down conversion rate to how often a quarterback throws hot gets a little wobblier. What turns it into a play: real word on the severity plus a look at who slides over. Until then it's a note, not a number.
  3. Von Miller in Dallas, 37 years old, one year, and the club saying openly they'll work him in slowly. That last part is the tell. Slowly means rotational, means passing downs, means a snap count before it means a stat line. What turns it into a play: seeing him with the first unit on obvious passing downs rather than as a change-of-pace toy.
  4. Najee Harris to the Giants on a one-year deal. Every one-year running back signing is a question about short yardage and nothing else. What turns it into a play: who takes the first-team reps inside the five, because that's where the money lives.
  5. Seattle and Terrion Arnold. The reporting says the Seahawks still plan to sign the corner but are working through the timing. That's a rumor with a heartbeat, not ink on paper, and I won't treat it as roster fact. What turns it into a play: a signature and a practice rep, in that order.

The one I'm leaning on

The Chargers line. A center going down in a joint practice is the single item on this wire with a plausible path to actually changing how a game gets played, and August injury news is the category most likely to sit undervalued while everyone argues about fantasy tight ends. That's a lean, not a play. I don't have severity, I don't have a replacement plan, and I'm not pretending otherwise. The math says pass until I do.

One item that belongs nowhere near any of this: Calais Campbell spoke publicly for the first time about the death of his mother and his brother's murder charge, and asked for continued prayers and support. That's the whole note. Nothing else goes next to it.

What I'm watching next is the word on Biadasz and the first snap count that tells me how San Francisco actually plans to use McCaffrey. Camp is entertainment with variance attached, same as the rest of it, 21+ where legal, and August is the easiest month of the year to talk yourself into something.
