Monday of Week 3 is the least romantic day on the football calendar and my favorite one to work. The games are graded, the MRIs are back, and the board for the week is still written in pencil. When people ask about NFL best bets today, the honest answer is that exactly one number on my sheet has cleared, and the rest of this column is me standing at the window watching four situations that might get there by Wednesday.

So here is the radar, not the slate.

NFL best bets today: the spots on my radar

  1. Giants at Rams tonight, Darnell Mooney over 1.5 receptions. Offered at +111, my fair number is -107. That is a real gap, roughly nine points of expected value, and it is the only thing on the card I would call solid. What turns it into more than a lean: nothing. It is already the closest thing I have, and I am not talking myself into a second leg to keep it company.
  2. Falcons at Packers on Thursday. Michael Penix Jr. makes his season debut on a short week, on the road, in Green Bay. Meanwhile the reporting out of the Packers building says Jayden Reed's injury is to his back, not his neck as first believed, and he was expected back in Green Bay on Monday. That is two receiving corps in flux on a three-day turnaround. What turns it into a play: Reed's practice participation Tuesday and Wednesday, and receiving props posted before the market fully digests a quarterback debut.
  3. Cowboys and Ravens in Rio de Janeiro. The league's field director said there are "no concerns right now" about the surface. I file the phrase "right now" the way I file a pitcher being "available." What turns it into a play: an actual adverse walkthrough report, which historically leans the total down, plus how Baltimore's offense responds after a frustrating loss to the Saints.
  4. Denver's backfield fog. J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey both banged up, and the Broncos are taking the week before naming who is ready. What turns it into a play: a back getting named early, before the rushing props catch up to the news.
  5. Washington's quarterback situation. Jayden Daniels is seeing specialists on the dislocated left elbow with no timeline established. Season-long numbers hang on that timeline, and until there is one, the math says pass. Nothing about a futures price is worth guessing a medical opinion.

The one I lean on

Mooney. A +111 offer against a -107 fair price is the kind of small, repeatable edge that pays a mortgage over a season and buys a sandwich over a night. No heroics, no parlaying it into a story. That is a lean, not a play, and if the number comes back toward my fair price before kickoff, I shrug and go watch the game like a normal bear.
