The WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx beat the Las Vegas Aces 92-87 on Saturday night, and the loudest thing about it was who carried the load. Olivia Miles finished with 23 points and eight assists. Napheesa Collier added 19. In a five-point game against the franchise that has spent the last several years setting the bar in this league, Minnesota's best player didn't have to go get 30 to win it. That's the part worth sitting with.

There is a version of the Lynx that leans on Collier for everything, every possession, every late-clock bailout, until the math gets thin in a playoff series. That was not this game. Miles running the show for 23 and eight means the offense had a second engine, and a second engine is the difference between a good regular season and a team that survives a seven-game grind in the fall. Five points is a real margin against Las Vegas. Not comfortable. Earned.

Give the Aces their due here too. They are the two-time champs, 2022 and 2023, and they did not roll over. An 87-point night and a one-possession stretch run against the team with the best record in the league is not the profile of a group that's finished. It's the profile of a group that needs one more piece of the puzzle to fall in the right place at the right time of year.

checked the almanac: the last true Minnesota dynasty won four titles in the 2010s, in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017. Collier arrived after all of that, in 2019, and has spent her career being the reason the next one is possible. Saturday looked like the night she stopped having to be the only reason.

And a grace note from the same weekend, because this league keeps stacking history on history: Candace Parker and Elena Delle Donne headlined the Hall of Fame class of 2026. Two players who defined an era, honored while the players who inherited it are out here trading haymakers in August.

What I'm watching next is whether Miles keeps carrying that kind of usage against the league's better defenses, and whether these two find each other again when the calendar turns and the games get heavy. I'd like that. A lot.
