The Cleveland Guardians 10,000th win landed Saturday night at Progressive Field, a 6-1 decision over the San Diego Padres, and it made Cleveland the third American League franchise ever to get to that number. No confetti cannon can really carry that kind of freight. A single game on a mid-August Saturday, carrying 125 years on its back.
Here is the part that should stop you for a second. This organization was founded in 1901, a charter member of the league, and it took the whole run to get here. Do the division: 10,000 wins across roughly 125 seasons is an average of about 80 wins a year, every single year, without a gap. Nobody averages 80 wins a year on purpose. You get there by simply refusing to go away, through world wars and franchise renames and every kind of ownership, through the good decades and the ones nobody in Cleveland wants to relitigate.
And the ledger those 10,000 wins sit in is a genuinely strange one. Cleveland won the World Series in 1920 and again in 1948, and nothing since, which is one of the longest waits in the sport. The 1954 club won 111 games and then got swept in the Series, one of the great cruel jokes in baseball history. Larry Doby broke the American League color line in a Cleveland uniform in 1947. The 2016 team took the Cubs to Game 7 and lost it in extras. The 2017 team won 22 straight, which is still the longest winning streak the American League has ever produced. The name on the front changed to Guardians in 2021. The wins kept accumulating either way, because that is what wins do when a franchise stays alive long enough.
What comes next is the least romantic thing imaginable, and I love that about it. These two clubs close the series Sunday afternoon at 1:41 ET at Progressive Field, and win number 10,001 will feel exactly like every other game in the middle of a pennant chase, because that is all it is to the twenty-six men who have to play it. The number is for us. The standings are for them.
What I'm watching next is whether this Cleveland club gives the milestone a proper frame by playing October baseball, because a round number is a nice trophy and a banner is a better one.
