The WNBA said Monday that fans asked to cover their shirts during Sunday's Fever-Dream game should have been free to wear them. That is the whole of the WNBA fan shirt policy story in one line: the league did not defend the call, it reversed it, and it did so inside about a day.
The specifics, as they came down: at least three fans were approached by league security personnel during the game and asked to cover shirts carrying messages about transgender women participating in women's sports. The league's Monday statement said the fans should have been free to wear them. I do not have the arena-level detail on who gave that instruction or what, if anything, happens to the people who carried it out, and I am not going to guess at it.
What makes this matter has nothing to do with which side of that argument a shirt was on. The WNBA is a league whose modern identity was built, in part, on people in the building being allowed to say things out loud. Once that is your brand, the standard applies evenly or it does not apply at all, and a security guard improvising at a section entrance is the exact place where an unwritten policy goes to die. That is the mechanism here. Not malice. No guidance.
