Monday of a college football week is the quietest my desk ever gets, and the honest answer on CFB best bets today is that nothing has cleared. My board is empty. That is not a shrug, that is just where Monday lives: the weekend noise is still settling, and the only two games on the calendar with a kickoff time attached are midweek.
So treat this as the radar, not the slate.
CFB best bets today: the eyeing list
- Liberty at Coastal Carolina, Thursday, 7:30 ET. Short week, nonconference, Conway on a Thursday night. Midweek frontier games are where attention thins out, and thin attention is usually where the softest work lives. What would turn it into a play: availability. I want to see who actually travels and who actually practices before I trust anything about this one.
- Army at Temple, Friday, 4:00 ET. Army's whole identity is possession count. When the Black Knights are clicking, they do not just win the clock, they delete drives from the other team's afternoon. This is a total-facing spot for me, not a side-facing one. What would turn it into a play: a number that prices Army's drive count honestly instead of pricing a Friday-afternoon conference game as a generic Friday-afternoon conference game.
- West Virginia at 3-0. The win over No. 25 Virginia is how respect gets built, and respect gets priced. The GameDay chatter around Morgantown is the tell that the wider audience just noticed a team the numbers noticed a while ago. What would turn it into a play: a spot where the Mountaineers are still being judged on last year's résumé instead of this month's.
- Ole Miss and Trinidad Chambliss. Herbstreit is out here calling him the best quarterback in college football, full stop, no hesitation. Quarterback coronations travel into prices faster than they travel into results. I am not fading the player. I am watching for the narrative tax. What would turn it into a play: an Ole Miss number that has already paid that tax, with something on the other side.
checked the almanac: gameday's first campus show was south bend in november 1993, notre dame and florida state, the game of the century. every set the show has ever built started with somebody deciding a 3-0 team was worth the trip.
The one I lean on most
Army and Temple, and I lean toward the under side of the conversation. Not a play. A lean. The mechanism is simple: Army's offense is a clock-eating machine, a 4:00 ET Friday kick is not a shootout environment, and games where one team refuses to hand the ball back tend to end with fewer snaps than the model expected. If the total shows up where I think it will, I pass and say so. If it shows up a touch north of my number, that becomes the first real conversation of my week.
Everything else on this list is a maybe wearing a nice jacket.
What I'm watching next
Availability reports out of Conway and Philadelphia, and whether the market starts paying West Virginia like a 3-0 team or keeps paying them like a hunch. That is the next number I am tracking.
This is the Read, not a tip. Nothing is graded on Monday and nothing needs to be. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and let the week come to you.
