Texas erased a 20-point fourth-quarter deficit and beat No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 on Saturday night, and the Texas Ohio State comeback ended the way these things always seem to end: one yard, one pile, one guy deciding to go over it instead of through it. Hollywood Smothers scored from a yard out with 25 seconds left, leaping the stack. Twenty-five seconds. That is the whole margin between a coronation and a gut punch.
Do the arithmetic on that quarter, because the arithmetic is the story. Down 20 entering the fourth, winning by one at the horn. That is a 21-point swing inside fifteen minutes of football against the best team in the country by every measure anybody had on Saturday morning. Games like that do not happen because one side got lucky on a tipped ball. They happen because a defense finally got a stop it had not gotten all night, and because an offense that had been stuck decided, very late, that it was not stuck anymore.
And the fourth-ranked team in the country was the one doing it. That is the part that will live in the room in Austin all season: not that they won, but that they won from there.
Checked the almanac: these two met in a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Cotton Bowl after the 2024 season and again to open the 2025 season, and Ohio State won both of them. Texas had spent two years getting close enough to smell it. Saturday night they finally got the last yard.
What comes next is the committee conversation, and it is going to be loud. The projected playoff top 12 gets rewritten after a Week 2 result like this one, and it should. Ohio State does not vanish from that picture because of a one-point road-style loss, and anyone treating a 23-point night from the Buckeyes as a collapse is not watching carefully. But the top line in the country changed hands on one leap, and every poll and projection from here has to account for it.
What I'm watching next: how Ohio State's fourth-quarter defense looks in its next meaningful test, and whether Smothers is now the guy Texas hands it to every time the field shrinks to a yard.
