Late September Sundays have a sound to them, and today it was mostly the training room door swinging. My MLB best bets today folder opened with five numbers on it and closed with two I actually respect, because the wire spent the morning subtracting players faster than anybody was scoring runs.
One human note before the numbers: Alex Bregman left the Cubs game after a foul ball caught him in the face in the on-deck circle. No angle there, no read, nothing clever. Just hoping he's fine.
MLB best bets today: the five numbers on my card
| Spot | Offered | My fair | Edge | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tigers/White Sox Under 8 | +106 | -105 | 5.33% | solid |
| Giants +1.5 vs Dodgers | +116 | +105 | 5.15% | solid |
| Cubs ML at Cincinnati | -150 | -151 | 0.35% | lean |
| Brewers ML at Baltimore | -194 | -185 | -1.60% | pass |
| Guardians ML vs Athletics | -223 | -209 | -1.99% | pass |
- Tigers at White Sox, Under 8 (5:31 PM ET). Plus money on a total my number prices at -105. That's eleven cents of daylight on a game two clubs are playing out in a cold-weather ballpark in the third week of September. What turns it into a play: the total holding at 8 with the price still on the plus side once lineups post. If it flips to the minus side, the edge is gone and I go make a sandwich.
- Giants +1.5 against the Dodgers. Los Angeles is juggling the rotation, recalled Emmet Sheehan, and is only hoping to have Ohtani back in the lineup this week. A short-handed staff and an uncertain lineup card is exactly the condition that makes a runline soft. What turns it into a play: knowing the actual starter and seeing Ohtani's name or absence in writing.
- Toronto ahead of Baltimore on Monday. Rough day for the Jays. Dylan Cease is scratched from his next start pending an MRI on his shoulder, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. exited early in Texas with left lower back tightness. I have no priceable number on Monday's game yet, and I'm not pretending otherwise until I know who takes Cease's turn and whether Vlad plays. That's an information spot, not a betting spot.
- The two chalk prices I'm not paying. Brewers at -194 when my fair is -185. Guardians at -223 when my fair is -209. Both sides are probably the better team. Both prices ask me to pay for the privilege. The math says pass, twice.
checked the almanac: september 20, 1998, cal ripken sat one out in baltimore and 2,632 straight quietly ended. the lineup card is the first thing i read. always.
The one I lean on most
The Under 8 in Chicago. It's the biggest gap on the board and the cleanest mechanism: a number I'd pay a small price for, offered at a price that pays me instead. Mind that gap like it owes you money. It's a lean, not a play, and it only becomes anything if the number is still sitting there when the cards drop.
Owning the morning: my Cubs number was a lean at about a third of a percent, which isn't an edge, it's a rounding error in a nice suit. Chicago won 9-1. Right side, nothing to bill for. Cincinnati also lost Chase Burns to a groin strain, and a 15-3, 2.86 arm going on the shelf reshapes how I price that club's remaining starts.
What I'm watching next: the Cease MRI result, whether Vlad's back lets him into Monday's lineup in Baltimore, and whether that Detroit total holds at 8. This is entertainment with variance, 21+ where it's legal, and the sizing is always yours. You know where to find me.
