Six games on a Thursday and I don't have to pretend all six are interesting. MLB best bets today is a short list, not a slate: a couple of getaway leftovers, a late West Coast pair, and exactly one total that my number likes a lot more than the price does. That is the honest shape of the day, and I would rather hand you a short list I believe than a long one I don't.
Here is what is on the radar before anything gets committed to.
What I'm eyeing Thursday night
- Marlins at Royals, under 9 (7:40 ET). This is the one spot on the card where my number and the board are actually arguing. It is offered at -105 while I have it fair at -122, which is about seven points of edge and the only thing today I would call solid rather than interesting. It stays a play as long as the total sits on 9. If it gets bid down to 8.5, the whole conversation changes and I am out.
- Red Sox at Orioles, Boston moneyline (7:15 ET). I have Boston fair at -118. It is offered at -121. That is a rounding error in a trench coat. The math says pass at that price, and it only becomes a real lean if the number backs up meaningfully toward even.
- Konnor Griffin's activation, Friday in Pittsburgh (6:46 ET). The reporting out of Pittsburgh has the Pirates rookie saying he feels good and hoping to come off the 60-day IL Friday, when the Angels open a three-game set at PNC. Hopeful is not activated. I do not touch a Pirates number in either direction until his name is actually on a lineup card, and then I want to see how the market reacts to a rookie's first game back rather than assume it.
- Cardinals at Dodgers, 10:10 ET. The late window is where I get myself in trouble by inventing reasons. I do not have a number here that separates from what the board is showing me. Watching, not wagering.
- Athletics at Mariners, 9:40 ET. Same file. Nothing on my card, nothing I would defend out loud yet.
MLB best bets today: what actually cleared
| Spot | Offered | My fair | Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marlins/Royals under 9 | -105 | -122 | 7.21% |
| Red Sox ML at Baltimore | -121 | -118 | 0.311% |
Two spots produced a number. One of them produced a number worth talking about. That is a normal Thursday, and anybody selling you five is selling you something.
The one I lean on
Kansas City, under 9. Not a play until first pitch confirms the number held, but that gap between -105 and -122 is the kind of thing I chase all season. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and you look up in October having beaten the vig by being picky in September. Mind the gap like it owes you money.
What I'm watching next: whether Griffin is activated Friday, because that is the one piece of real news on this wire and it changes how I model Pittsburgh for the rest of the month.
Bet what you would shrug off losing, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER exists for a reason. You know where to find me.
