The Seattle Mariners odds movement this morning is the loudest thing on my board, and it happened without a headline attached to it. Seattle opened -174 for the 9:40 PM ET finale out west against the Athletics and now sits -147 at a no-vig shop. That is roughly 63 percent implied down to about 59. On the other side of the same game, the Athletics have been +145 since the number posted. The dog price never moved. The favorite price came to it.

That is a tell. Not a scream, a tell.

It shows up everywhere else in the game, too. Seattle's -1.5 went from -105 out to +102, which is the same money saying the same thing in a different language. The prediction venues have Seattle around 60 percent, basically in line with where the moneyline landed rather than where it opened. And the run environment got cheaper, not richer: the over at 10.5 drifted from -105 to +108, while a lower book is still hanging 9.5. A full run of daylight between shops on the total at midmorning, in September. That gap is worth watching more than the moneyline.

Here is my honest problem, and I would rather say it than dress it up. I do not have the mechanism in hand. No confirmed lineup card, no pitching change, no injury note I can stand behind. Twenty-seven cents of favorite juice does not evaporate because the market got bored, so something moved this number, and I want to know what it was before I pay for it. Meanwhile the public tip sheets out this morning are pushing Mariners bats and pop. Sharp money shortening a favorite while the tip column tells you to back it is a combination I have learned to sit on my hands for.

So: no play from me on Seattle at a hollowed-out -147, and no dart at the A's until I know whether I am buying a real edge or just buying whoever got scratched. The math says pass until the card posts.

What I'm watching: the confirmed lineups and any pitching change for the late game, whether -147 keeps sliding toward a coin flip, and whether that 10.5/9.5 total gap consolidates. If both books meet at 10 and the under keeps getting bought, the story was never the bats.
