August 31 is the sneaky-best day on the baseball calendar. It is the last day teams can add a player to the 40-man and keep him postseason eligible, so contenders spend the afternoon shopping other people's rosters, and by first pitch two clubs look different than they did at breakfast. That is where MLB best bets today have to begin: with the transaction wire, because the board has not caught up to all of it yet.
The reporting says the Orioles claimed Luis Robert Jr. off the Mets while sitting in the scrum for the last American League wild card. Word also came down that the Yankees claimed reliever John Schreiber from the Royals, a straight bullpen add on the deadline day for eligibility. Two claims, two contenders, zero prospects surrendered. That's a tell about how thin the market for late-summer help really was.
What I'm eyeing on the MLB board today
- Brewers at Cubs, Under 9.5. Offered -107, my number says -124. That is 17 cents of daylight, the widest gap anywhere on my sheet. What turns it into a play: the wind at Wrigley. I do not have the flags in front of me yet, and a stiff breeze out to left rewrites this total before I finish typing.
- Giants at Braves, Under 9. Offered -105 against a fair -119. Same shape as the Wrigley number, and I like that two independent games are pointing the same direction rather than one weird outlier. What turns it into a play: the number holding at 9. If it ticks to 8.5, most of the edge walks out with it.
- Athletics at Rangers, Over 7.5. Offered at +102 with my number at -109. Plus money on a side my model wants is the cleanest kind of small edge. What turns it into a play: the price staying north of even.
- Orioles at Rockies, Baltimore moneyline. Offered -126, fair -129. A thin lean, and Coors is where thin leans go to get humbled. The Robert claim is a real roster upgrade for a wild card push, but I do not know whether he is in the lineup tonight, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
- Yankees at Angels, New York moneyline. Offered -118, fair -119. That is a coin flip with a haircut. Schreiber makes the late innings better in October, not necessarily in Anaheim tonight. On the radar, nothing more.

MLB best bets today: the one I lean on most
The Wrigley under. A lean, not a play, and it stays a lean until I see the wind. Small edges taken over and over, no heroics: that is what a September bankroll actually looks like. Everything else on this list is a solid or a shrug. The Padres at -138 with my number at -142 and the Braves at -182 are correctly priced games, and correctly priced games are not a market failure, they are just Monday.
What I am watching next: whether Robert lands in the Baltimore lineup card in Denver, and whether that Cubs total gets pushed to 10 before anybody notices. Baseball is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is the number that matters most.
