Dallas settled its quarterback room on Monday, and the way it settled it says more than the depth chart does. The Cowboys named Sam Howell the backup QB and waived Joe Milton III, and the freed roster spot went straight to free agent running back Emari Demercado. Two decisions in one move.

Start with the obvious part. Howell over Milton is experience over upside. Howell has been through the fire already, a full season of starts in Washington, and whatever you think of how that went, he has taken NFL snaps with a live rush coming and a real game plan on his wristband. Milton has the arm everybody talks about at the combine and in August. Dallas decided August isn't the season.

The part I find more interesting is where the spot went. A team that genuinely feared it would need its No. 2 quarterback does not convert QB3 into a veteran running back. That's a coaching staff saying it likes its backfield depth less than it likes its quarterback health. Whether that reads as confidence or as tempting fate depends entirely on how the season treats them, and no roster move has ever talked a defensive lineman out of anything.

checked the almanac: the 2017 Eagles won a title with their backup taking over in December, so nobody in this league needs a reminder that QB2 is a real job. It's just a job most teams would rather keep quiet.

For Milton, waivers means a phone that should ring. Arm strength is the one trait that never stops getting a young quarterback a look, and there are rooms across the league thinner than Dallas's. For Demercado, it's a chance with a team that just cleared a body to make room for him, which is about as clear a vote as a free agent gets in the last week of August.

What I'm watching: how many first-team reps Howell actually takes once the games count, and whether Demercado carves out a role or is just insurance. Also worth tracking on the other side of the opener, where the Giants have Malik Nabers feeling good but staying noncommittal about Week 1.
