  1. Braxton Berrios back with the Giants. The reporting says New York re-signed the 30-year-old receiver and returner to the practice squad on Monday with the intention of making him active for Week 1 against Dallas. That is not a headline signing. It is a hidden-yards signing, a returner and slot body brought in specifically for a division opener, and field position in a first meeting between two teams with unsettled offenses is worth more than the transaction wire suggests. What turns it into a play: a total that treats both offenses as fully formed when neither one is.
  1. Dallas names Sam Howell the backup, waives Joe Milton III. They cleared the roster spot for free agent running back Emari Demercado. QB2 quality is a season-long lottery ticket that nobody prices in August and everybody screams about in November. I want to know Dallas has a functional Sunday if the worst happens. Howell has started NFL games. That is a real answer.
  1. The Cowboys' right tackle job is open. Brian Schottenheimer said Terence Steele and Broderick Jones will compete for it. An unresolved tackle spot in Week 1 against a division opponent is exactly the kind of thing that shows up in pressure rate before it shows up in anyone's projection. What turns it into a play: clarity on who wins it, and a number that hasn't accounted for the answer.
  1. The Jets go into the year with rookie Cade Klubnik as QB2. No veteran insurance policy. None. That is a franchise telling you what it believes about its floor, and it is a season-long win-total consideration more than a Week 1 one. That's a tell.
  1. Pittsburgh won't talk to Joey Porter Jr. during the season. Longtime team policy, final year of his rookie deal, and a corner playing for a contract in a defense that asks a lot of its corners. I file that under motivation, which is the softest input in handicapping and still not zero.

The one I lean on

Giants and Cowboys in their next meeting, and specifically the special teams edge Berrios represents against a Dallas roster still sorting out its offensive line. A lean, not a play. Nothing on my sheet has separated far enough from anything posted to call it an edge, and I'm not going to manufacture one on the last day of August.
