The thing about Donald is that he never left because he was finished. He left on his terms, still wrecking games, still the problem every offensive line coach drew up their week around. He has a Super Bowl ring from LVI and three Defensive Player of the Year awards, which puts him in a room with Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt and nobody else.
checked the almanac: only three men have ever won that award three times, and one of them just signed a new contract at 35. that's not a comeback, that's a dare.

And then there is Beckham, who made the Giants' initial 53-man roster after a year out of the league. Twelve years after New York drafted him, after the ring, after the stops in Cleveland and Los Angeles and Baltimore and Miami, after the catch that people still describe with their hands. Coming back from a full season away is genuinely hard. Coming back to the building where it started is the kind of story that makes late August worth staying up for.
